Re: Filene's

If it were possible (would i be?), getting a complete rebuild of the DTW Orange Line platforms would be awesome.

Re: Filene's

The only things in re: to the MBTA in this plan are improving the Shopping Concourse and building a new iconic headhouse in Shoppers Park.

Also the new rendering from Cambridge that I was talking about was a full skyline one. Don't think it's part of that posted PDF.

Re: Filene's

Rendering isn't wowing, me, but it's fine. I'm glad they're building something north of 600'. I'll withhold real judgment until I see the skyline renders.

I promise you, the skyline renders are quite something. It's nice to have something rise a little bit above the downtown plateau. Hopefully they will be up soon, datadyne's right about it not being on the PDF.

Off-topic, thanks for the kind words, everybody. I'll probably be headed down to the Northeastern discussion next week to take some notes again.

A couple others are here:

I'm sure some larger, higher resolution ones will show up at some point soon. It really is great to see this moving forward and I think it is something for the whole city to be excited about. That said, am I the only one who, aside from the overall height, prefers the original Vornado and Elkus proposal?

Quite possibly. A while Alucobond skyscraper would be like wrapping the John Hancock Building in vinyl siding.

Re: Filene's

Nice to have this gap filled for any number of reasons, and I hope the developers will tie together a lot of the loose threads at ground level (it sounds like it from others' comments) but like some other posters I regret that it couldn't have been something with a bit of daring or architectural interest. Looks like a glass slab taking up space in the skyline without the Hancock's elegance. Another "something is better than nothing" project. :(

Re: Filene's

el-cheapo

I've heard this phrase plenty of times before, but it's now my mission to work this into everyday conversation as much as possible.

Back on topic, I must say this looks like it will do great things for the downtown skyline, to which I say FINALLY.

Re: Filene's

Those renderings look great; finally something that breaks the downtown flat-top (albeit barely).

Ah yes, there they are. Imagine those on 24x36 foam boards!! I had my camera in my pocket and wanted to photograph them, but the room was so full that I felt awkward taking photos.

Re: Filene's

I really shouldn't read comments on online articles, but wow, people are already saying it will take the "charm" out of Boston. Judging from their profile info though, these people don't even live in Boston.

In any case, I'm glad this tower was approved!

I'm on the fences with this development. I guess I will have to see it built to see if I like it. Overall the Boston Skyline is Ancient.

I think its time to try to move to the 21st century.

Re: Filene's

Wait, hang on.

When and where was this meeting, again?

Filene's was on last night's BRA approval agenda at 5:30 at the BRA Boardroom/9th fl CH.

Item V - Filene's/Millennium Tower NPC Approval lasted just about an hour. Probably around 30 people spoke in favor of the project. 0 against.

Refer to the previous page.

...son of a bitch, we've been had.

I'm assuming this meeting was set up and well publicized in advance, right? Or, you know, at least better publicized than the hearings on axing Red/Blue?

Perhaps you might even, if you were so inclined, insinuate that MassDEP timed their hearing deliberately to conflict with that?

Certainly explains why the 5pm hearing was attended by a grand total of six people...

Re: Filene's

What are you unsure about Rife?

I'm not a fan of the developments of the Millennium buildings, I feel like they have all the same development style for all their buildings. A futuristic look, that too many of the same developer's buildings that cluster in the same area seem to defeat the purpose of character for the city.

The renderings do look nice in the downtown location. So lets move forward anyway.

I don't like 33 Arch St. at all. I think the building is very ugly.... poor choice of architecture for a Boston type building.

I just hope the new Filenes building being developed does not turn into a 625ft 33 arch street mixed into the Ritz type style building. Instead of something Iconic we get a giant futuristic piece of shit on another Landmark piece of real estate. We already have one mistake in the Seaport with those stumps Boston we don't need another in DTX.

I tend to agree. I'm in favor of this project only because it fills the hole. I have no real love for the project itself. I'm just not a fan of the "Millennium" style, and tall & shiny just isn't enough.
Also I will remain convinced that the Franklin St ground floor will be major downgrade from what was there prior until proven otherwise.

That said, bring it on and lets get some equipment rumbling.

Re: Filene's

These renderings are better than the previous ones, but I still like the original plans better, especially at the street level. I guess I'll never come to love glass boxes so I'll have to wait for some other century to be happy.

Re: Filene's

Why do they need to wait nearly a year to start construction?
