From what I understand, a not so insignificant amount. The primary argument now is that not having access to the upper harbor limits the offshore wind potential. With the current bridge, the width is a very real restrictive element. With the proposed new bridge, I'm not sure exactly what the issue would be beyond offshore wind vessels. There are small and medium sized cargo ships that do come and go from the harbor. I'm sure it would be great if they had access to some of the facilities north of the bridge. But I'm not sure if the proposed bridge height would limit them or if access to the upper harbor would have much of an impact on demand for cargo traffic.
 
They have the pier built out and in use for Vineyard Wind. I wasn’t aware of plans for other buildouts north of Route 6 and south of I-195.
 
Seems like they’re putting all their economic development eggs in this one basket but the area north of the bridge looks to be entirely utilized by fishing businesses and what isn’t would require massive amounts of dredging.

Can’t help but wonder if anyone’s looked at a chart.

Crazy pitch territory: Have they looked at routing Route 6 along 195 and removing the bridge entirely?
 

Avangrid and Vineyard Offshore submit bids for tri-state offshore wind auction​


“NEW BEDFORD — A global offshore wind lifting equipment manufacturer could establish a first-in-the-nation davit crane manufacturing facility in New Bedford if Avangrid's bid for the Massachusetts-Connecticut-Rhode Island tri-state solicitation for offshore wind power is selected.

In October, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island announced a first-in-the-nation offshore wind multi-state coordination memorandum of understanding. Combined, the three states have the authority to solicit and procure up to 7,000 megawatts of offshore wind to provide energy to the New England power grid.


Avangrid is one of four companies that submitted bids along with Vineyard Offshore. Both companies' plans include a New Bedford component. SouthCoast Wind and Ørsted also submitted bids, which were due today.

Liftra USA, Inc., a crane manufacturer, plans to bring manufacturing facility to the South Coast Mills site near the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal contingent upon a winning bid from Avangrid Inc., for multiple proposed wind farms….”

I don't think it's in the realm of "plans." I think it's more about trying to open up potential.

45-Unit Mixed-Use Project Under Review in New Bedford​

“Plans are now under review for the development of the vacant lot at 193-197 Union Street in New Bedford. One Circle Co. plans to build a mixed-use project to include 2,500 square feet of retail space along with 45 apartments. Per the project filings, the developer hopes to begin construction in Summer 2025. The site is located two miles from I-195 and U.S. Rt. 140 in the heart of New Bedford’s historic center, the property is a short distance from the city’s downtown attractions, including the working waterfront, museums, restaurants, and entertainment destinations.”
