Nimbys; plural noun: Nimbiess

A person who objects to the siting of something perceived as unpleasant or potentially dangerous in their own neighborhood, such as a landfill or hazardous waste facility, especially while raising no such objections to similar developments elsewhere.

Origin

1980s: acronym from not in my back yard .

This could be fun.

URL's are automatically parsed into BB code. No additional BB code is needed. All you have to do is paste the URL.

Also, we have been discussing the story you've posted extensively in this thread: http://www.archboston.org/community/showthread.php?t=4867

I'd already fixed that. Thx

The article isn't the topic of the thread. My intent is to create a thread about nimbys and such. This can be the spot to post, view and talk about topics, articles, issues regarding nimbys.

Thx though

Objecting to a landfill or a hazardous waste facility seems reasonable. It's the unreasonable behavior that we mind.

Perhaps I can adjust your definition?

Nimbys; plural noun: Nimbiess
a person who objects to the siting of something perceived as "unpleasant", "potentially dangerous" or "status reducing" in their own neighborhood, such as a landfill, a new transit line, or an apartment building.

Origin

1980s: acronym from not in my back yard .

^ It isn't just status reducing. Anti-gentrification is NIMBYism too - some people like their dumpy neighborhood just the way it is!

My definition of the modern urban NIMBY would be a person who reflexively and irrationally opposes any and all change out of paranoia that the outcome will be negative for them personally. No amount of facts or mitigation is ever enough to overcome the fear of a true-blue NIMBY.

^ Right. It's provincialism, and the fear of change for them personally, often masked/rationalized as concern for the neighborhood/community.

Right. There is a difference between NIMBY's and BANANA's (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything) though there is some overlap.

The "true" definition of NIMBY has been lost in time. Now it means anyone who says, "No," even when they have legit or reasonable concerns.

People use "gentrification" incorrectly, too.

A bizarre situation is currently happening in Turkey. 3 residential towers were built in Istanbul, completed, and sold all the units, but UNESCO freaked out because they allegedly impact the "views of the Blue Mosque." Now Turkey has ordered that these brand new towers be demolished.

The Turkish Council of State has ruled that the OnaltiDokuz Residence, a trio of towers between 27 and 37 stories tall in Istanbul‘s Zeytinburnu district, must be demolished in a landmark ruling that could have major ramifications for the country’s planning system.

As reported by Oliver Wainwright in the Guardian, the Turkish Council of State ruled that the development “negatively affected the world heritage site that the Turkish government was obliged to protect,” possibly in reaction to comments made by UNESCO in 2010, who threatened to put the city on its list of endangered world heritage sites.

...

The ruling has also garnered further criticism for Turkish president-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Already under fire for his proposal to destroy Gezi Park in favor of a shopping mall, sparking widespread protests across Turkey in the past year, Erdogan has denounced high-rise development and publicly claimed not to have known about the OnaltiDokuz designs. However former culture minister Ertugrul Günay questioned this claim, saying “He is personally keeping track of giant construction projects all over the country. High-rises in Istanbul can only be done with his permission.”

Also, some commenters have pointed out:

Saudi Wahhabists are opposed to historical preservation, because it resembles "idol worship" to them. Or something like that.

Most of Mecca's historical sites have been destroyed.
