North Washington St Bridge

The above report is over 1 month out of date at the time of posting here to this site.

Here is an updated refreshed report through late-March. The timeline of the updated construction report is validated via checking the schedule of events at TD garden being updated to reflect future dates instead of historical dates.

Description of Scheduled Work:
  • Installation of bridge deck formwork
  • Installation of sidewalk steel and formwork
  • Installation of electrical utility conduits on bridge structure
  • Installation of gas and water utilities on bridge structure
Dates report is valid for: 2023-03-21 - 2023-03-31

Additionally, MBTA bus schedules were updated on March 12th, 2023. At this time, there are no changes to Route 92 or 93 bus service that connects Charlestown and North End via the bridge.

Amusingly, the new detailed city experience on Apple Maps has the temporary bridge (complete with S curves on the approaches). It will be fun to see how long that sticks around.

Girders spanned the entire Charles when my bus passed over the temporary bridge Saturday! Operator had a lead foot and a clear lane ahead, so I couldn't get a photo, but I counted at least three of the four lines of girders reaching the opposite bank.

The superstructure is moving along really well. Based on that, it seems like it could be at least open to traffic next year, with some finishing touches going into 2025.

Yeah it really seems to finally picking up in speed.

as of Oct 2022 update:
  • 3 lanes of traffic will switch to the new bridge in Winter 2023
  • The bridge will be fully open to all users in Winter 2024
  • The contract will be completed in Spring 2025 after the temporary bridge is demolished
From what I remember, the east sidewalk will open when the 3 travel switch over (the east side walk is hugely important is it means not having to cross the street on both ends of the bridge to connect Charlestown/N End/Freedom Trail route).

its amazing how people can be given this update in Oct 2022 and come away with skewed perception. reality is that the bridge will basically be back to where it was before construction 1 year from that point (14 months). But people left the meeting saying, "its 2022 now, and its not done until 2025. thats 3 years." when in reality, even if you go by contract complete, it was still only 27 months total and contract complete mostly has to do with removing the temporary bridge which wont impact users anyway.

This all assumes, of course, there arent more delays.

So, I'm assuming that the construction workers are back to work, fixing the stuff that went wrong before. :)

North Washington Street Bridge, MBTA bus service changes July 2nd:

Route 92 service will be going to every 50 minutes midday and 30 minutes peak hours (change from every 40 and 25). Route 93 will be going to every 35 minutes midday and every 27 minutes peak hours.

This is a 48% service reduction from pre-COVID (Rt 92 every 30 mins midday/13 mins peak, Rt 93 every 18 mins midday/7 mins peak).
