Portland International Jetport | PWM

DesertMaineiac, I shared your wear and tear concerns with Paul Bradbury and he is requesting the City Council to appropriate funds on November 18th to install new carpeting throughout the entire upper concourse. The goal is to have it completed for the opening of the Gate 11-14 expansion which will be a huge visual improvement and add uniformity throughout the concourse. (y)

This is almost as exciting as the gate expansion and FIS design to me. The carpet in the older half of the terminal is...let's say...."past its prime"

When Paul told me of the plans to add new carpet to the entire concourse I started to tear up! :ROFLMAO: A people mover SHOULD be used on the fixed walkway that will provide access to the jetway at Gate 14. The actual distance from the terminal to the entrance of the aircraft will be almost 150 YARDS which may be the longest "elevated" sheltered walkway at any airport in the country! Will be a hike for the elderly and small children but that's what you get when you do an expansion on the cheap instead of extending the actual terminal equal distance which will hopefully happen in the future. Fortunately the terminal is being extended (blue) to what equates to the area of one gate which will help during peak periods. Overall I am pleased with the list of upcoming improvements and the jetport is doing the best it can with the budget constraints and the focus is now shifting from the runways/taxiways to the terminal. Just a refresher on the actual lengths of the fixed walkways where benches and water stations may be required! Gate 12 is just a 5K compared to the marathon at Gate 14. :)

Well, that will be a tough one for the souls in the dead of winter coming back from Florida in their shorts.

That was me last April. It was freezing, and we were standing on the tarmac while we waited for our wheelchair user to be unloaded from an Embraer on a damp cold night!

Do we know, are the gate desks for 12 and 14 going to be in the walkway (presumably part of the Budd buildings), or is there going to be just one in the main terminal so they can only board or deplane one aircraft at a time?

The gate desks will be in the terminal and the fixed walkway will be divided up to the access point of Gate 12's jetway so both gates can be used at the same time from what I've been told. In the previous rendering you can see the width of the walkway is wider up to Gate 12 and then narrows the remainder of the distance to Gate 14. The Rubb buildings primary purpose is ramp support and equipment storage needs due to 12 and 14 not having ground level operational space like the rest of the jetways that are physically attached to the terminal. They also provide heat for the ramp agents during the winter months and may be used for baggage staging for departing flights.

Are these walkways elevated or ground level to allow the jetways to work for 737,A220,A320,A321, A319?

Two more notes: The concourse has already been closed off to the public at Gate 10 for construction purposes. The transition from Gate 10 to Gate 14 will be as seamless as possible with the only visual change (minor) will be the overhead lighting due to advancements in LED technology from when the current portion was built back in 2012.

They are elevated and the jetways can accommodate all aircraft that currently serve Portland. I think 757's would have to utilize Gates 2-7 which have a little more apron space if an airline were to serve PWM with that aircraft in the future.
