Roux Institute Campus Development | Portland

I keep looking at the swing bridge and the huge, missed opportunity that could be used. That ship has sailed.
Yes! A rail line that could serve downtown, the Roux Institute, East Deering, Falmouth, Cumberland, and Yarmouth! With 295 being a complete joke, this could have been an amazing, affordable alternative for the area.

Realistically, if rail were ever extended north of the city, it would most likely come from Bayside, not around the East End via the Grand Trunk. Otherwise, via the Grand Trunk you're re-introducing rail to Commercial Street, and Commercial Street is an entirely different animal today than it was decades ago when rail was active along Commercial.

So, by that token, the bridge is still obsolete and unusable.

You don’t think a streetcar/tramway service like you see in small cities in Germany or even in the US (Little Rock, Norfolk, El Paso, or Memphis) would work eventually in Portland?

I think it would be a chance to set an example for small cities across the country. Especially is there were stops like the Roux, Rock Row, Deering Junction, and Portland Foreside that could be build up into TOD.
I’m hopeful but don’t have as much knowledge as others on this. I would love to take a train into work from Yarmouth or Gorham instead of sit in traffic.

Sorry for getting off topic in this section of the forum, this could probably go in the rail discussion!

It'd be too expensive now to re-introduce a trolly system.

Although *IF* Portland had a Trolly ... I think it would do even MORE to put Portland on the map as a quintessential and iconic New England small city.

Even if it only went up and down the middle of Congress Street, it would be cool. Maybe Commercial, a Bayside/West End Loop. Spring and Middle Streets would be cool, if not so narrow. Maybe a connection down Forest Ave to USM or a little further, then back around the cove to Bayside.
