Silver Line to Chelsea

You mean WALSH & Baker, don't you?

I had no idea Chelsea annexed Boston.

The SLW bus should be electric only, not dual mode.

The Chelsea busway should be electrified but both the Deval and Baker administrations hate the planet.

My guess is since they are likely going with battery powered buses (or some type of hybrid thing I can't find the name of at the moment) when the dual modes retire, they didn't bother.

This is the kind of contention where actual life-cycle costs and pollution grams-per-mile numbers are needed, not just a "electric is better" (and I say this as a Nissan Leaf owner (bought used, because "new" costs couldn't be justified) I believe in electric, but know that others can deliver similar results driving a Prius, or Ioniq, or frankly better results simply by sitting in an empty seat on a bus, no matter how dirty)

Think of Refurbing the dual modes as driving a recycled bus--saves a whole lot of manufacturing emissions and produces a bus that is still far better than most possible propulsion.

The big win is probably the simple act of directing new commutes on to bus (powered in any fashion) and directing development to TOD around SLW.

Beyond that, buses will go hybrid (diesel-electric), or tribrid (overhead, diesel, battery) or battery-electric (www.proterra.com)--tech that is changing so fast that all you can really say for a 2014 or even 2016 propulsion choice is that (1) something better was coming soon and (2) the real goal is to get the ROW built, the commutes redirected, and the development going.

It will take more, they are essentilly taking the slots in the tunnel occupied by half of the 746 trips to operate the 743s. Only 2 buses are freed up by eliminating half of the 746s, the total requirement of 741/742/743/746s will go up. The 746 will go down by 2 while the 743 will be 2+x buses (I think it was something like 5 more).

They will have enough spare dual-mode buses to increase the requirement and operate at least a 10 minute peak frequency to Chelsea once the overhaul of the dual-modes is complete or close to complete. They will not have enough however to operate it every 5 minutes (twice the buses it will take to operate it every 10, if it will take 7 buses to run every 10, it would take 14 buses to run every 5)

Edit for additional info:
Just for comparison, right now in the PM peak the 746 South Station-Silver Line Way uses 4 buses to operate every 5 minutes, meaning a 20 minute round-trip time for each bus including layover/recovery time at terminals. The 742 South Station-Design Center uses 7 buses to run every 5 minutes, a 35-minute round-trip time including layover, while the 741 South Station-Airport uses 6 buses to operate every 10 minutes for a 60-minute round-trip time including layover.

+1 Thanks! Excellent explanation.

No, the mayor of Boston doesnt control how the Silver Line is designed.

SL2 should have been electric since day 1. So throw Romney in the pile too.

I actually published an academic paper on the subject. It was titled:

"My 4th grade math homework"

Lol, the math makes sense. I'm asking if there's official documentation of a desired headway that someone could link to.

jsss. I figured that since Walsh put his 2 cents in and wanted the casino in Everett to be named Boston Everett Casino, that he's put his 2 cents in here as well.

Walsh doesnt give half a crap about transit

He better! Especially since he poked his nose into the planning of the Everett Casino.

He better make sure that Boston resident have easy access to the place with a minimum amount of trouble!

Where do things stand in terms of getting the MBTA access to the police access ramp for the TWT?

You mean the "Silver Line Way" access ramp (per Google Maps) that the State Police abducted? (Sorry, this is just one of those parochial power grabs that I hate about state government here.)

There hasn't been any sign of progress in the last 13 years. I doubt anything will change until someone in a positon of power decides its worth picking up the phone.

It's something that could be changed in a matter of minutes, if anyone at the top cared.

(Hint: they don't take the T, so it doesn't affect them.)
