I agree. There are several puzzling design decisions on this one, but overall I think the presence that this building brings to the square, with its more appropriate scale and use of materials, is an improvement over many of the others lining it currently. Hopefully the William Rawn designed public housing which abuts it gets a similar treatment soon. These "townhouses" were conspicuously under-scaled from the start and have always looked out of place (not unlike most public housing projects in Boston). Oddly enough, that project was widely lauded when it was built back in the 80s, receiving many notable accolades at the time. I think the city has evolved far beyond these sorts of projects today, and I would be happy to see it replaced by a larger, mixed-use, mixed-income complex. That cornice ignoring the bay windows sticks out like a sore thumb.
That Keno lounge was more depressing than most. No on premises liquor license so just old people playing 10 games of Keno, stepping outside for a smoke. 10 games of Keno, stepping outside for a smoke ...Wait, so Hub (Video) is outright closed? I drove by it just last week and I saw they were doing renovation work but didn't think it was gone. That's a neighborhood institution, used to rent Genesis games there as a kid. I guess the gentrification of the area means there aren't enough elderly to fill the Keno lounge any more.
