South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

Wow good catch! My apologies for only skimming the article. Glad to see it wasn't a rehash of that beam falling back in March.

You can get a cool view of the tower from the skylight in the bus terminal.

Again, does anyone know the status of the bus terminal expansion? It was supposed to be partially open by now.

I recently went through Port Authority in NY and it was even more run down than I remembered. Major cities like Chicago and Philly are losing their bus stations as Greyhound sells off its real estate. There have been these reminders that the South Station Bus Terminal is actually a pretty great asset for the city. I'm hoping the expansion is just as good.

Guy in the backpack was within inches of death. Incredibly lucky.

I can't see it. Is it someplace other than Instagram?

EDIT: Here's the original video. The first one I posted is even clearer though, from a closer angle. Terrifying stuff! Amazing that nobody got hurt.

Cool video. But at 1:30 , the report says the MBTA reopened the station to train travel in 1989 ??
South Station was extensively renovated 1988-89. That's when the full-high platforms were installed and the current waiting area was reconstructed. So there may have been disruptions such as the waiting area being a mess or partially out-of-commission and platforms being taken out-of-service one at a time, but the station never was shuttered.

I think the "pendentives" look nice. They're a grand entrance to the train platform. But the transition between them and the track area is jarring... and actually completely lacking. There's suddenly just a big overhanging wall. And so far the opening to the wind and rain and snow is still there (over the existing waiting area). Hopefully they close that off with some windows or a nice faux wall. But overall it's obviously such an improvement to the open tracks of yesteryear.
