An architectural abomination, seemingly deliberately designed to not fit with its surroundings. Maybe the archdiocese intends selling off the church in a few years, so a developer will have a template to work from in the replacement building/

Doubt they'd sell it. It's one of the highest grossing parishes with a very popular priest. I think they had no experience and taste for shit.

Tangent. How and when did Scotia ad this part of Belvidere end up being dead garage/verizon/empty lot alleyways? Were there ever townhouse here like on St Germain?

This church and addition are literally the only urban-minded structures on these cross streets. Kings is an abomination at street level and the Hilton is an atrocity.

The Kings building used to be Sack Cheri Cinemas 1-3, and it probably contributed more to the street level back then simply because it caused lines to form along the sidewalk waiting to buy tickets. It also had loud and colorful posters and billboards advertising the current films.

The street was full of townhouses on the other side of the New England Telephone/AT&T building and the Hilton was a Boston Public School. A combination of the Prudential urban renewal project, taking out the school for a hotel, and the expansion of the phone infrastructure, also probably related to the neighboring Pru, doomed that street to mediocrity. The Prudential Center, Christian Science Center, and the Church Park block projects gutted that odd triangle of a neighborhood. Not quite Back Bay, the South End, or Fenway, it didn't really have enough of a cohesive identity to stave off the wrecking ball from the interested development parties. A really odd and overlooked part of the city from a historical and topographical standpoint.

Even before all of that, it was a neighborhood without a clear identity according to Kevin Lynch's The Image of the City (1960).

Itch -- Agree -- what is wrong with these architects -- as they are planning these additions -- don't they ever look at the original structure that they are supposed to enhance and the other buildings surrounding it -- before -- they deposit their bags of dog waste for posterity?
