Man, the Tandem building looks really slick from the side. Too bad they have to have concrete crash barriers to keep drivers from crashing through their windows (cars ruin everything)

My recollection is that there was a dry cleaner in here previously, and then I'm assuming this site was a gas station at some point in the past??

Property had a multi unit residential building in poor condition (tax assessor comments) back in 1924. I can't remember what gas station brand was located there prior to the dry cleaners, maybe markhb will know.

Thanks for putting me on the spot! ISTR that Dick Stewart had a couple of stations up there, a Shell and maybe a Mobil? One was where the other new apartment block is now, and possibly this was his other? Just guessing, though... It's beena long time :)
 
Sorry, but you're my historical go to guy when I can't remember! :) I didn't frequent that part of Congress Street during my younger days and I would use the Exxon on Park Avenue by the Expo for gas and free road maps when I was in town.

Hamilton's. That one I knew better; ISTR it was originally an American / Amoco before they pulled out of the East.
 
I always make a point of stopping at Tandem Coffee when I'm in town. The baked goods are out of this world, and speaking of international travel, food, and lodging, this adjacent hotel is designed by a leading firm of which has built boutique, artsy, and upscale hotels all over the world. The Tandem picnic table social scene will surely hop a bit more with guests during late summer and into fall, or perhaps next year if the construction schedule becomes lengthened (probably).

Taking reservations starting September 29 (starting at $699/night!) but I'm still squinting and trying to figure out how they'll get there. Maybe I'll be surprised.
 
Wow! $799 a night on Saturdays during the fall season, I think the Westin might be cheaper. The days of me spending $13 a night at the Portlander Motel on that stretch of Congress Street in the mid 70's are long over! :(
 
The Portland Regency which is traditionally the most expensive hotel downtown is $475-520 during the same period in September. The Longfellow Hotel is next door to a bakery and closest to Maine Med if that counts for anything.
