The Lucas | 136 Shawmut Ave | South End

Styled in the school of Bomber Harris.

I know we have a Brooklyn thread but isn't 1945 Dresden a bit beyond the scope of ArchBoston?

i would have loved to see this fully restored and then become a boy and girls club, or maybe an indoor pool on the lower level and maybe basketball upstairs.... something really cool for the kids...

Oudurandia -- the place wasn't a ruin that need restoration -- it was a church that either needed a new congregation or else a new raison d'etre. When neither surfaced the Archdiocese of Boston sold it to the highest bidder

The result -- not a classic facadectomy -- more like a facade taxidermy

They kept the nice masonry and in its midst is the usual glass curtain wall mini-tower

The Boston Chinatown Evangelical Church tried to purchase the building -- they own the building right next door, recently purchased. My understanding is that they were both outbid by the developer, and that the Archdiocese really does not like to see Catholic churches repurposed to other religious uses outside the faith.

The photos of the walls standing like ruins make me wish that it was rebuilt into a vast climbing structure and park for all ages. It wouldn't happen with property values where they are, but it would be a neat place to explore.

Has anything actually been happening on this project? Seems like it's been sitting idle without much action all year.

Yeah. They just knocked the shit out of the church. (Metaphorically)

I like the way the shell of the church looks. It would make an awesome park / outdoor event space.

MDD -- Have you got about $25M rattling around in your back pocket -- that's probably what it would take to buy up the site in it's present condition complete with the permitting for the Lucas

I heard from the real estate network that this project is stalled due to a labor dispute. It is likely to be months behind schedule.
