Thinking of moving to Portland

to elaborate, this area is home to sprawl retail development, fast food, tattoo shops, and
worldly grocery stores

and although close to downtown, it is culturally a different area

Oh my.

Wow, that was a well produced news report, even the cheesy music was a nice touch.

I saw 'American Gangster' last night at Cinemagic, it was pretty good and goes along well with this topic of illegal drugs in the city.

I lived on Sherman St. with my dad for a couple months while in between houses (he now lives in Bridgton) and I don't recall it being too bad. I considered the area between Grant and Park Ave to be the very worst, along with St. John St.

I would say the West End up by Maine Med over to Danforth St. is my favourite neighborhood that I would really enjoy living in. As it is currently, I can barely afford a studio apartment in the 'crack zone' of Portland (these all retail for about $550-650) so I'm dealing with driving an hour and a half to work and back and school and back from my dad's house.

Channel 13 is so freaking funny now. They keep doing all these types of investigations and special reports and they make them so dramatic. I'm sure they'll be doing their own "to catch a predator" at some point. The other night it was about MAINE MADE PORN. Wasn't even porn but that Arch Enemies website out of Augusta which is mosty lingerie and stuff.

Back to best neighborhoods. I hate North Deering for some reason. I don't know why I just do. My favorites would be the west end, USM area along Forest ave(william, pitt, fesseden), and probably right where I am in the Old Port.

Corey, I've seen some amazing apartments on Sherman st. I have no idea why that whole area is so bad with crime. You'd never know it by looking at the apartments. I remember the city did a huge crime sweep one night in Portland and most of it was in that area. They even had the helicopter in the sky flashing down.

It looks like I'll be answering some roommate wanted ads. The only studios I can afford are in and around the crack zone. Sure, I'll be passing through it to score some smack. But I don't want to live there.

If any of you Portlanders know of someone seeking a roommate walking distance from USM, hit me up.

my neighbor is looking for a roommate, 650 a month, across from USM

also, the crack zone is not too bad if only passing through

Are you checking craigslist for roomates wanted?

I've already found a few that are near USM

That seems like the best fit of the ones I saw. Absolutely perfect location for you. Quick walk/bike to Hannaford's (grocery store) and the college is a couple streets away. I'd call them up if I were you.

Thanks. I've had my eye on craigslist. This looks like one that I'll check out.

Craigslist has been having a drought of less-than-$700/month apartments in Portland for a few weeks now. I hope it picks back up again. My budget is right around $600.

Patrick wants you to live in elderly housing. Btw, my granddad built that building back in the day.

There seems to be plenty of housing for lower class and upperclass on the peninsula. Not trying to make any politicla statements, but I think there is a middle class housing crunch. Just a little bit.

I looked at a couple places in the USM area this weekend. The Downeaster offers a big student discount when you buy six tickets in advance. One-way fare comes out to $12.67 versus the full $23.

I arrived at 1pm and left at 3pm. So I was on the train 5 hours for a 2 hour visit. But the train is a breeze. I find it very relaxing and look forward to riding it more.

Do you remember the street names of the places you visited?

On a side note, We're buying our first house. It's on Ocean Avenue near Cheverus. I'll show pictures when I get them. Hopefully we'll be able to move in by Christmas. No more views of Ocean Gateway and downtown for me anymore.

Hey Patrick, did you ever have Mr. Mclean at Deering? He's the guy who's house I'm buying. He wasn't there when I was but I know you where there when he was.

Both good streets and close to USM. You going to take one of those or still search? THat must be a pain to look for places from another state.

One of them interests me and I'll take it if they'll have me. If not, the search goes on. And yeah, it is hard searching from out of state. I've never done anything like that before and it feels a little adventurous. Also, I've been living a 45 minute door-to-do commute from my school, so it will be a pleasure to be so close to the USM campus.
