What I hate about Boston

Calatrava would have remained an engineer and produced more unique cable stayed bridges than any other individual in history before dieing of old age or something falling on him.

Perhaps, a unique cabled stayed bridge would fall on him.

The gigantic property owners like Druker, Gorin, even the old Sawyer parking lot empire. They manage their latifundia on the basis of maximum exploitation, minimum civic pride. Their monopolies discourage the reinvestment and improvement that would have been occasioned by periodic ownership turnover. With a low cost basis, there is no incentive for them to improve the properties, which they will milk until the day each can be ripped up for a big score.

Look around. If you see a piece of crap, there is a fair chance one of these folks owns it.

Dude, you are accusing developers of being developers. That happens everywhere, not just in Boston (and not just in cities). It doesn't matter what the flavor is, it's how it is everywhere.

Technically he is accusing bad developers of being bad developers.

I'm not sure you could levy the same charges against, say, Norman Leventhal.

I hate Gehry's projects. Yes I said it. Crumple looking building inspired by crumple napkins is just not my thing. Glad he didn't build anything monolithic in Boston. His designs are definitely of an acquired taste.

Not just bad developers, but bad property owners. In contrast, Mr. Leventhal epitomized civic pride. Still time for the others (here is a shout out to you, Mr. Fitzgerald) to follow his example.

Advertisements for national products that try to play up the local angle.

I saw an ad in the Improper for olive oil (sold in a green jar) with the tag "The Other Green Monster".

That about 300th 'other' green monster I've seen.

That and all the oh so clever plays on the Boston accent.

"Get yer ice-cold beah"

Oh Budweiser, you know us soooo well.

Yeah, I love it when national brands feel the need to remind us that we have funny accents. Every once in a while I forget.

Gehry is from Boston?

Like many famous people out of the GSD he worked as an intern at Perry Dean Rogers, when either Robert Dean or Charles Rogers were on the faculty.

Machado Silvetti is probably the most masterful firm working that gig to its advantage right now. Picking out the most talented people and getting them in the door, before other firms have a chance to pick them up, is a big deal for the most creative firms.

I really can't count everything that offends me about this plaza wall.

Maybe it's just simply the corny photos of happy white people enjoying their "lifestyle" of shopping and eating. Or maybe it's that, seriously - it's creepy. Creepier than the soaring naked-man statue, which might otherwise be classy if it weren't cheapened by having a white-happy-people-shopping-photomural behind it.

Those blue eyes. Those polo shirts.

It keeps people away from the plaza.

It keeps me up at night.

Duck tours: "And here off to your right, witness a photo-realistic recreation of happy white people enjoying their time at the Chestnut Hill Mall! I mean, the Prudential Center! Who wants to cross the Marathon finish line?"

If you really have to show how much people are enjoying the lifestyle that your shops provide, you're clearly faking it. Does that make sense? It doesn't need to make sense... It's ugly as all hell!

Take the faces down! Add some steps, some bleachers, a stage for the people, a real focal point we can be proud of!

The humidity is godawful. And why is it no matter what direction I'm biking in, I'm always fighting the wind??

The beach bacteria level. Every sunny and warm day warrants that all nearby beaches will have high bacteria level.

You know what I hate about Boston? The "Bostonians" themselves. Now hear my rant as to why.

It's most likely, like many others, I will leave Boston behind as soon as I finish college and start a career. Why? It's because I can't stand to live in a city that fears progression. Don't get me wrong, I love Boston. It's the mindset that most Bostonians have that I despise so greatly. Sure, I bet most of you reading here are already thinking "Fine, if you despise it, then leave. Nobody is stopping you." And you know what? I'm probably going to take that offer. Why stay in a place that refuses to change and adapt, so afraid to face reality?

Bostonians are generally stuck in the past. They ironically became the opposite of what they were. Once bold and daring, a forefront in changes in America, they have now taken a backseat, constantly wallowing in Boston's great historical past, yet unwilling to create new history to remember by. Sadly, these Bostonians sit around and look down at other cities, too arrogant to realize that their city is falling behind many others. What makes it more sad is that it isn't even denial, it's total ignorance.

So go ahead, for everyone who wants to make a change, a bold change. Let's leave so that the conservative Bostonian can wallow in their ignorance forever while the true Bostonians spread change elsewhere. It's a shame.

Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today...

Honestly, leaving Boston has made me appreciate the city so much more than I did when I lived there. When you leave and get some perspective you see just how precious a gem Boston really is.

You know what I hate about Boston? Pricks like Kent who constantly whine that we aren't progressive enough. I'm also sick and tired of these pricks using the term "progressive" and only comparing it to architecture and urban planning. You morons always forget that Boston is a leader in social politics: Boston lead the drive for gay marriage in the entire commonwealth, and Boston lead the state legislature to enact a bill the requires everyone to get health insurance. These are huge issues and even the great cities of NYC and SF don't have the political might to change these policies in their states. Kent, I want you to move out of Boston by the beginning of next month because you're taking up too much space. Why don't you go and move to the southern states and live with the bible thumping conservatives that are erecting "progressive" buildings? The only real downside for living there is that the local communities love to strip away your civil liberties if you aren't a WASP. But hey, its sounds like you are a straight WASP so you shouldn't have a problem!
