Who Wants To Be... MAYOR!

Does anyone here know what Menino did in the time between his 1963 graduation from Chamberlayne Junior College and his 1983 election to the City Council? I've read over all easily accessible biographies and it strikes me as a bit odd that not one of them even mentions his pre-political life beyond birthplace and education. I can't imagine much beyond him being a coat holding stooge in City Hall but it would be interesting to know.

I voted for Menino muthafuckas!

Oh yeah, I can't believe how dumb New Yorkers are for re-electing Bloomberg.

Van, trying to abolish rent control stupidity in NYC is akin to the attempts to reform the nomenklatura. Those with such a good deal are willing to burn the entire enterprise to the ground before giving up their perks. To be honest, I'm surprised Boston had enough common sense and courage to abolish rent control years ago.

Pretty sure that Boston, Cambridge, and Brookline voted overwhelmingly against abolishing rent control -- and those were the only municipalities that had it. Submitting these local ordinances to a statewide vote was an abuse of democratic process.

Cambridge and Brookline were prosperous and desirable places then and still are today, but they now have less room for non-rich people.

you mean smart, Bloomberg is one of the most successful mayors anywhere in the world and is a true non-political technocrat who only works for the best interest of his city, something that we need more of in our government.

Ron, we also have far less arson for profit now and people like me can actually properly maintain properties while turning a small profit. The average quality of housing stock has improved since the abolition of rent control, given that now one actually has the ability to put money back into a property rather than collecting a check until it falls down.

If the city was doing everything possible to slow down residential development through stupidity, the market would be far more favorable in general. But much of the banter on this board is a testament to how the city continues to obstruct supply meeting demand.

Swell...

A shame this didn't come out before the election...

The Boston Globe said:
DEA: Boston mayor liaison talked drug deals on job
December 21, 2009

BOSTON?Federal authorities say a liaison to Mayor Thomas Menino already charged with distribution of the painkiller OxyContin and marijuana discussed dealing drugs in his City Hall office.

James Doyle, a special agent for the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, testified Monday that John Michael Forbes eventually sold 125 Oxycontin tablets for $5,000 to a man secretly cooperating with police.

Doyle said the 31-year-old Forbes also promised to arrange a city job for the man.

Forbes, who has been suspended from his $50,000-a-year job as East Boston neighborhood services coordinator, pleaded not guilty Monday to drug distribution charges. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Forbes's lawyer, Victoria Kelleher, said her client is addicted to Oxycontin and needs treatment.

Boston City Hall Worker Charged With Dealing Drugs

A Boston City Hall employee faces decades in prison and over $1,000,000 in fines after being charged with distributing Oxycontin and marijuana, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Thursday.

John Forbes, 31, of East Boston, was charged in federal court earlier today.

Forbes is employed by the City of Boston as a neighborhood coordinator for East Boston. He is charged with one count of distributing Oxycontin and one count of distributing marijuana.

Boston Mayor Tom Menino called Forbes' alleged behavior "completely unacceptable," and has placed him on unpaid administrative leave. "I believe public employees must be held to a higher standard of conduct and I am very saddened to learn of these allegations today, but any personal decisions made by Mr. Forbes should not be a reflection on the tremendous commitment and dedication the Office of Neighborhood Services has for improving the lives of people in our neighborhoods."

They mayor has scheduled a disciplinary hearing for next week that will discuss Forbes' possible termination.

According to Menino, police and the U.S. Attorney's Office have been investigating Forbes since July.

If convicted of the Oxycontin charge, Forbes faces up to 20 years in prison, three years probation and a $1,000,000 fine. If convicted of the marijuana charge, Forbes faces up to five years in prison, three years of probation and a $250,000 fine.

Boston City Hall Worker Now Linked To Arson Plot

Authorities say a liaison to Mayor Thomas Menino already charged with distribution of the painkiller OxyContin and marijuana, has been linked to an alleged arson plot.

An agent from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) testified that John Forbes, 31, of East Boston, who is a neighborhood coordinator for the City of Boston, is linked to a plot to possibly burn down the home of a government witness.

Special agent James Doyle made the allegation in U.S. District Court in Boston at a detention hearing for a co-defendant, Lawrence Taylor, who has been indicted for dealing OxyContin.

After learning about the distribution charges, Menino suspended Forbes from his job and placed him on administrative leave. Menino has also scheduled a disciplinary hearing for this week that will discuss Forbes' termination.

Forbes is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.

Forbes' attorney, Victoria Kelleher, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

ED: if mods want to move this to its own thread, that's cool with me...

So, if the feds were working on this since July, did the mayor know?

Good question, John.

I wonder if the whole email controversy was a "beard' to keep the press off of this story?

This is evidence of my claim about elected officials in my neighborhood: they get into politics because they're too dumb for organized crime.

Will Dorcena ready to run for mayor

Former Boston City Council At-large candidate, Will Dorcena of Dorchester, has thrown his hat in the ring for another political position announcing Thursday morning at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury that he will run in 2013 for Mayor of Boston.

Dorcena, son of Haitian immigrants and brother to 12th Suffolk District Rep. Linda Dorcena Forry, said he needs the early start: “What I want to do is reach out to many Bostonians as possible and that requires time. I’m 21 months out because I need that time to put in the work. I’m running a grassroots campaign, street by street, block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood.”

Although he lost the election in 2011 by a huge margin, Dorcena said his run for mayor will be a very different campaign for many reasons.

“With the City Council, I was in the race for 150 days, and so I realized soon after that I needed more time,” he said. “I didn’t have the time to do the outreach, but I got about 9,000 votes and many were surprised that I got that many. People took to the message of me speaking openly and honestly. It’s not about pointing fingers but rolling up our sleeves to do the work to make the city a better city.”

Born and raised in the Uphams Corner neighborhood of Dorchester, Dorcena said he will move on a platform to combat the city’s high crime rate and a push for better education in the public school system.

“One of the things we continue to experience in the city is high rates of crime and violence. And although we have the best colleges and universities in the world, local kids aren’t being prepared to get in these schools. The young kids in the 22-plus neighborhoods in Boston depend on us to make the right decisions for their future. And that’s what has me in this race. I’m pro-Boston, pro-community, pro-job growth, to make sure voices of the community and voices of the taxpayers are heard.”

A graduate of Boston College with an MBA from Babson College, Dorcena worked as president of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative in the late ‘90s. He served on the board for 11 nonprofit organizations throughout the city and co-founded the Boston Haitian Reporter.

Let me guess his platform will involve a massive transfer of wealth to the usual bottomless pits and heaping of identity politics. I think I'll pass on a David Dinkins or Coleman Young rerun.

When I'm older I'm hopefully going to run for mayor of Fall River, and possibly Boston.

I'd be pro development

IAM thinkin yOU getseleTED MAYO Falls RIVER. THEN. ANNEXX BOSTON plAces. Then WE have this BATLESHIP in BOSTON!!!! I pro DeVLEPmont too!!!

I wanted him to retire gracefully, not go out on a gurney ....

Mayor Menino hospitalized for virus
By Andrew Ryan, Globe Staff

Mayor Thomas M. Menino has spent the weekend in a Boston hospital with a virus after coming home two days early from a vacation in Italy, his spokeswoman said on Sunday.

Menino has been lethargic and coughing and his feet have been swollen and bothering him for some time, said the spokeswoman, Dot Joyce. He went to his doctor on Friday afternoon for a series of tests and was admitted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

“They are diagnosing it as a virus as this point,” Joyce said on Sunday. “He’s fine. He’s tired. He is participating in decisions regarding the storm.”

Doctors have ruled out pneumonia and bronchitis, Joyce said. It does not appear that the swelling in his feet is connected to the virus, Joyce said. Doctors did not indicate when Menino would be released from the hospital.

“We’re hoping Monday or Tuesday, but we’ll see,” Joyce said.

Menino, 69, has been mayor for almost 20 years and is considering a run for a sixth term next fall. He has been hospitalized roughly a dozen times over the past two decades for aliments that have included two knee surgeries and Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammation of the intestines.

On a trip to Italy in 2010, Menino contracted a bacterial infection in his left elbow which required two stays in a Boston hospital. Earlier this month, Menino and his wife traveled to Italy for a two-week vacation highlighted by a Mediterranean cruise. The trip, for their 46th wedding anniversary, included a stop in Sicily, where Angela Menino was eager to explore her heritage. The couple cut the trip short and flew back to Boston on Thursday.

“He knew there was a storm coming and he wasn’t feeling well,” Joyce said.

Before the vacation, Menino began wearing running shoes with his dress suits. His feet have been swelling, Joyce said, and the shoes are more comfortable.

“His feet have been bothering him for some time,” Joyce said. “They don’t believe they are connected” to the virus.

?!

Didn't this happen the last time he went on vacation to Italy, too?!

EDIT: I suppose I should have read it. "On a trip to Italy in 2010, Menino contracted a bacterial infection in his left elbow which required two stays in a Boston hospital."

can we kidnap bloomberg and make him mayor of boston. also did he really name an 800 ft skyscraper after himself?
