Who Wants To Be... MAYOR!

I can't believe I'm the first person here with the news that Menino's not running.

I was on the train when I saw it on my Twitter feed. I was rushing to get over here and post it, ahaha. :)

Old news. Heard it on the Howie Carr show at about 6:15. Who's going to run besides this Connelly porker, that's my question.

Wouldn't expect much out of Flaherty, I think he's generally regarded as damaged goods. Assuming he gets in, Dan Conley will be very hard to beat, especially with nearly a million bucks in his war chest.

I'll throw a crazy name out there, one whose chances of running and/or winning are probably pretty slim.

What about Richard Davey? Since he took over the T and later MassDOT, I have to say, I've been pretty impressed with the guy. He lives in the city and takes the T regularly, so that's a plus. He seems like a strong advocate for transit and smart growth issues.

His weaknesses are obviously name recognition, and direct connection to the city's different neighborhoods.

Frankly, I would love to see the next mayor be an "outside of the box," techno-crat type. I'm concerned that if the city falls into the trap of electing neighborhood city councilors, it will ultimately harm us in the long run. I'd hate to see us longing for the "Menino days' a decade from now.

Flaherty's A) damaged goods and B) nearly invisible at this point. Davey would be interesting, but he's untested in an election, let alone a city-wide election. For better or worse, that's the thing city councilors and especially city-wide councilors have going for them: A) city name recognition; and B) election experience (and city-wide election experience for some).

That makes Connolly a huge front runner at this point. Pressely could maybe step in and take some steam off him. There's a rumor Scott Brown is looking to establish residency in the city. All three have name recognition and election experience.

Scott Brown would be a dud and a total waste of his time and money. As much as I hate to say it, he's better off running at the state level because Mass overall is (sadly) much redder than Boston.

@data
Definitely agree. He needs to let the stink wear off him, and then maybe think about running for governor when Deval leaves.

Brown has too good of a thing going for him between Nixon Peabody and Fox. If he ever returns to elective politics I would be very surprised. He'd be far more effective to the GOP as a fundraiser/event headliner and as a voice of the more moderate wing of the party. I wouldn't consider Presley to be much of a contender, she doesn't have much money(~$20k), plus she's black, hard left and an out-of-towner. For the most part, people have had enough of that act. They'll put her in a philosophical bed with Deval Patrick and she'll be toast.

I don't think Ayanna's problem is any of those things, per se - actually, the out of towner is a problem. She never talks about issues facing the city (perhaps because her focus is on bigger things?). I mean, women trafficking is important to me as to anyone else, but ... what?

Hallelujah. Maybe this city can finally move into the 21st century.

The next mayor will be whomever the machine decides is the most reliable and steady person and who also has some prospective longevity. They don't want to have to worry every 4 years. We just have to hope that whomever that person is, that they are friendly to development. Most of us won't have a say in this. That's how it is in Soviet Boston.

Holy hyperbole comrade! Don't suppose a Waltham resident would have much say in it anyway...

The President of the Freaking United States made a statement about Menino today!! You know you've left a legacy when the President makes a statement about you.

WASHINGTON (WHDH) -- President Barack Obama released a statement on Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's decision to not seek re-election.

"Boston is the vibrant, welcoming, and world-class city it is today because of Tom Menino. For more than two decades, Mayor Menino has served the city and every one of its residents with extraordinary leadership, vision, and compassion. His efforts to revitalize neighborhoods, schools, and businesses, better integrate police officers into their communities and reduce gun violence, reach out to the homeless and marginalized, and engage young people in the life of their city has charted Boston on a course for a better future. No two people wear their hearts on their sleeve for the City of Boston and its people as openly as Tom and Angela Menino. And as they depart City Hall next year, Boston will be a better place to live, work and raise a family because of the Meninos’ proud service to the city they love."

You get the feeling they had that partly written up before hand in case he died in office?

Although I'm happy he's moving on, I do like Menino and I'm glad I was introduced to this picture today. (I'm a fellow drummer)
