BU Development Thread

Without Euclid ... meaning if Euclid had gone the other way? Probably not. All I'm saying is that cities did not have wait for Euclid to adopt zoning (in the modern sense, not what toby is talking about), and they did not.

Okay, I admit: I only persisted in this ridiculous argument because there's absolutely nothing to talk about on this forum right now.

For those who are interested, One BU is a task force that was created to unify the campus undergraduate programs and colleges for a more holistic approach (this isn't really development focused). This is a huge report, but shows the effort being made by the current administration to give BU students more options and accessibility.

Do they have a website for their master plan? Even if it's very long range and mostly hypothetical, it's something I'd be interested in seeing.

^ Judging by that render, someone plans on taking the rail line through Cambridge that connects the north and south sides and turning it into a bike path or a greenway or something.

I can't find that picture, can you show the direct link? I'm hoping there's a bigger one, last time I saw it, I only payed attention to the building additions. I'm wondering if that picture is covering up Storrow Drive. It would be cool if BU one day manage to pull that off. Covering that Storrow drive and the Pike is as large (maybe larger) than the Big Dig as it will cover up those highways separating that part of the city and unlike the Big Dig, there will not be a glorified strip median "Greenway" still act like a divisor.

Personally, it would just be nice if they build over and connect the BU beach and the Charles River.

It does appear that the site where the BU Academy now sits, which was intended to become the new home of the BU Law school before they decided to remain in the Tower, would become a park that covers Storrow with a direct link to the Esplanade.

For that to happen, the BU Academy would have to be relocated. I would chalk that plan up as conceptual at best.

I think the sites that you will see developed in BU's near future are:

1) Deerfield/Baystate (East Campus Center)
2) The lot at Comm Ave/Granby (Computer Science building, and another academic use)
3) BU Law Tower renovation, and expansion (fundraising and plan should be announced anytime)
4) College of Fine Arts renovation and expansion (the plan calls for complete renovation of existing structure and a new tower in adjacent parking lot)

^^ What is the deal with BU Academy? What school would be comparable? BC High? Exeter? Something in between?

Looking at that satellite image, it's too bad they aren't developing that other lot. Does BU own it?
B.U. is no source of salvation. It will always crave, and carve out, parking lots until some law comes along to prevent it.

Not really. They've been replacing parking lots with buildings for years. The very one in discussion is replacing a lot, and they are not backfilling spaces in another location.

I don't think BU has torn down buildings to put up parking lots. This area is where Back Bay development petered out around the turn of the 20th century, and BU has been gradually infilling ever since.

^ Didn't there used to be a Burger King or some such where there's now a nice BU parking lot on Comm. Ave.?

This is part of the eventual construction of a new computer science building on this property which halted with the economy shoring up. I think this is one of those examples where "well, it's better than a parking lot" doesn't apply.

Bullshit!

A parking lot is never OK, and no one ever needs to make excuses for one.
