Liberty Mutual Tower | 157 Berkeley Street | Back Bay

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

Is Liberty Mutual going to buy that group of buildings at Columbus and Stuart and tear down that billboard?

BeeLine's picture is framed amazingly well. If someone wasn't familiar with the city, they might infer that this corner was one of the city's principle intersections/blocks...when in reality, its more on the periphery of the downtown area.

The picture almost makes that corner look like an appropriate place for Times Square-style LED boards....almost.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

stellar, they tried and failed.

I kind of hope not. While the building on the corner looks like it needs some TLC and the billboard should probably get the boot, I like the way it steps up higher and higher until you reach this massive new building. Plus, they have retail (I think?), so there's a big plus.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

That last shot confirms that this building would look better with a hat.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

I appreciate what this building is doing for Boston's skyline adding a new dimension to the huge gap connecting downtown to the Back Bay. I also think it's shape fits quite nicely. In all honesty though how much beige can can we throw up on the skyline at once? LM, Kensington,mp3. In ten years Boston will be standardized on 3 colors red, beige, and the blue popping up on 300" and below buildings we seem to all the suddent love after Millenium built the towers at DTX. I pray that Copley and Filene's will add some color schemes for your eyes to look in a different direction. Thoughts?

Hey, it's not brick. Boston can only move so fast.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

Supersized Statler Office Building.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

Maybe we are heading back to the 70's because the Liberty Mutual Building skyline seems like Brutalist architecture at its finest.

I can deal with shitty architecture as long as the building is built with quality. It seems that their is no more craftsmanship in these projects these days.

Atlantic Wharf seems to be a good example of a good QUALITY development.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

I don't see much Brutalism in this building really. I think it more resembles those buildings that came to dominate the PoMo period after the movement completely lost all pretense that it was still connected to its intellectual roots and simply became about attempting to halfheartedly approximate traditional architectural details in shamelessly cheap ways. This is most apparent when viewing the building from Copley Sq. as it pokes up alongside 500 Boylston and 222 Berkeley, its older PoMo brethren. I guess I would call it PoMo Revival.

Also, this building is shockingly fat on its wide sides. It certainly lives up to the Fatiron nickname.

Saltonstall II, pre-faded.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

I know that gerbil tube is nice as they go, but imagine how much less provincially Milwaukified Stuart St.'s granite canyon would look without it.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

I find that damn billboard much more distracting than the gerbil tube! As skywalks go, it's almost invisible!

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

The billboard is the only thing left contributing visual vibrancy to that intersection.

Would that the prow of the Fatiron were covered with more of them to form a sort of Piccadilly-Times Sq. hybrid.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

Would not a rooftop beer garden instead of that damn billboard be so much more...Boston? :)
