I kind of get the sense this is restricted to Chinese elders. Some of the funding used for construction was public tax money. So if it is indeed restricted how would that square with Fair Housing laws even if tax money hadn't been used?

That "Hong Luk House" sign looks pretty permanent. Maybe there will be retail in the other facades, but this one will be left a lobby or something, I guess.

This isn't restricted to Chinese elders. There's an open application process for anyone 62+ or permanently disabled. Housing advocates like HomeStart have the applications available for people to apply for units. The local CDCs usually do a big push to get elegible local residents to apply to projects like these, but the selection process is a random lottery for applicants who qualify.

I'm pretty sure this is part of the restoration of that facade -- they're replacing the stucco and installing new windows that fill the entire window openings (you can see that the top windows were replacements that only went part way up). There was discussion of this eons ago at a BLC meeting that I attended.

BTW, can someone update the thread name? It's Hong "Lok" with an O, not with a U.

The pictured building is not the Liberty Tree Building. The Liberty Tree Building is on the corner of Washington and Essex Streets and was restored many years ago for the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The Registry continues to occupy the building but apparently is moving to a new location in 2014.

Demolition of the building on the left, previously misidentified as the Liberty Tree Building, began in the last 24 hours. Front half of building is down as of 7:30am. I didn't realize demolition of this building was part of the project.

Some day we'll completely rid this city of the scourge of pre-war buildings. We have to just keep chipping away one at time.
