Why does every new development with outdoor seating have to be fenced in?
 
I think it has something to do with our liquor laws.
 
That sidewalk cafe looks like it's in need of a serious buffer... a row of parked cars would do wonders.
 
Better yet, how about some trees? Downtown is so devoid of them.
 
Handel Architects do the worst ground-floors. You can dress them up however you want, but these are literally holes in the wall.

There are trees! They're just so pathetic that you can barely notice them. They should fill nicely in a couple years. I hope.

Nice to see Nero is open. The transition of that small section of Washington Street over the past couple of decades is stunning.
 
Caffe Nero makes me realize that Washington through DTX should as a street be scaled similarly to London's Long Acre - a heavily traffic-calmed road with a single traffic lane and many trappings of "shared space."

What's the point of so many traffic lanes on this part of Washington if it essentially dead-ends?

Actually, the traffic flow to at least West Street is pretty critical. You have major new developments on Lower Washington (Archstone, Kensington, 45 Stuart) that have outbound traffic flow onto lower Washington Street. That traffic only has two exits -- Essex Street or West Street and Temple Place.
 
This is the first key part of the puzzle, once the tower goes up down the street this area is going to be incredible.

Caffe Nero is planning their second store in JP, and of course all the NIMBY nuts are coming out of the woodwork. I never thought that a quality European coffee chain, who plans their second Western Hemisphere store in your neighborhood would be something to boycott.

It's the whole anti-gentrification crowd, just like when starbucks opened up in southie. If it was a dunks, no one would care

Those who complain about (or "protest") "gentrification" are using a mildly fancy word to hide what is really driving them: they feel that if they themselves don't want to (or, sometimes, can't) pay for something nice, then nobody anywhere near them should even have the option of paying for, any enjoying, that service or product.

It's a way of using class-war/Marxist arguments to keep quality of life low - at the level where you deem it acceptable - for everyone around you. Basically, you make yourself the lowest common denominator and bring everyone else down. It's a lovely thing, that.
