50 Liberty @ Fan Pier | 50 Liberty Drive | Seaport

Put me down on the tacky side with the marble. It's out of place. There's no sense of tectonics or weight (therefore 'constructedness' or 'solidity') because it's applied like two-dimensional surfaces. No real difference in treatment from the glass it's coplanar with. It seems calculated to make people say, "ooh, marble, expensive" while still managing to look and work like bathroom tile. I'm not buying it.
 
i have the very minimum of architectural nomenclature. But i had exactly the reaction you describe. Except that i asked, "can i fall for it, re; accept the consequence of the 'assumed thinness of the fake rock' that results from this treatment?"

For me, the answer was, decidedly "yes."

Skittles lights and Eye Candy architecture must make a good number of you ill. Cue Beton Brut. i'm not a fair judge. i don't fuss over the Seaport much. Yet, i put this near top of the best cube shaped thing in the Metro.

Some of the buildings should have been split into 2 and the architecture is comparable to a fancy cd jewel box or packaging for an electronic device. i don't fret over it much. i'll chuckle when the nimby's defame the outcome of the Seaport in the Globe.

When this neighborhood fills in, it'll be a huge success. The place is going to be a vibrant village.... though, badly in need of some dive bars and modestly priced restaurants. Hopefully it will find them.

Need some Santa Monica Pier treatment down there (minus the Ferris Wheel).

Nooo thank you.. it’s been a few years since I’ve been to Santa Monica pier, but by all accounts, I remember the place to be pretty trashy. Wouldn’t want to be living near anything like that at all.

That’s a good way of putting it. It’s like the feeling I get when I know I’m looking at fake brick work vs the real hand-laden stuff.

I assume you're not confusing Santa Monica Pier with the old Pacific Ocean Park (POP) Pier from the 50s & 60s....

The (Legendary) Miki Dora is long gone... and the winter swells are no longer groomed by the old Pier.

POP Pier was nearly totally destroyed during the winter storms of '69, and gone (like totally) by the late-70s.

An epic surf spot (enforced by the Dog Town locals) was totally destroyed by the construction of the new Santa Monica Pier.

The buildings aren't very good at SMP. Clearly, they're not even trying to be.

The throngs of locals and tourists make spending an hour on the Pier such an enjoyable experience!

Nope, I haven't confused the two. I wasn't around in the 50's or 60's to know about POP Pier :).

Spending an hour there visiting probably isn't so bad. I just wouldn't to live right around there.
 
I love the Santa Monica pier. Unfortunately it would never work around here due to our short summers.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.
 
I'm loving the step-up roof seating, a real nice addition the Harbor Walk! Great views from every direction!
 
Was just at Santa Monica Pier, as boring as a shopping mall with "approved" weirdness to make people think they are having a authentic experience. Sunsets from the end of the pier are great though.

Yeah, as long as people remain respectful and clean up after themselves, this should be pretty nice, like the steps in the front of the ICA (albeit smaller of course).
 
It's similar to the T head-house in Downtown Crossing which is always busy.
