Let this be our periodic reminder that construction work is one of the most dangerous professions in America, and is actually far more dangerous than other "hero" professions that are put up on a pedestal by our society. These laborers and tradespeople put their lives on the line to enable the standard of living to which we have all become accustomed. Their service deserves our respect as much as anybody else's.

I hate labeling any profession as "heroic," but if I had to, I consider construction workers to be heroes.
 
I am so grateful that these things are so much less common, however, every time it happens it is a tragedy. These people who execute difficult craftsmanship (ever tried to hang drywall straight?) are akin to elite athletes. They have earned every penny they make and then some.

I wish the best for the family of this person.

Heavy machinery is an inherently dangerous job, and humans are imperfect and do make mistakes. I think it's too early to rush to judgement the company he worked for. We'll see after OSHA investigates though if there was any gross negligence or if it was a freak accident.

But yah I don't get what income inequality has to do with this project. The annual salaries for construction workers tend to be better then most other jobs for people without a college or other sort of professional education. Though Steve Wynn does strike me as being a shitty rich guy.

Um this is union only construction. Wynn is actually overpaying for these guys. Unions have the sole and exclusive contracts to build here, which means he is spending way more than if he chose not to sign the exclusive.

Paying a "30 percent premium" and you get a "28% delay" according to this study, using only union work.

That does not mean overpaying. That only means workers are receiving a larger share of their own labor. They still will not see even close to their share of the value they created though.

Never mentioned income inequality and frankly I think that is a poor metric to understand the social relationship of production and class society. What this does directly relate to, and I don't care if this seems "political" (sorry, but a death at a jobsite is inherently political, as is all production) is the wage system and exploitation. Those who do not own property and the means of production risk their lives to create value for those who do. This workers death is one example out of many of the brutal consequences. Wanting "apolitical" responses only means a refusal to question the society that birthed the conditions responsible.

Yah no one directly mentioned income inequality. But with the quote that I show above it does sound like a criticism of the wealthy with regards to the death of a rank and file construction worker. And I guess that statement does hold an element of truth, we'll see though when OSHA determines fault in this case.

If I had to guess if there is any wrongdoing with regards to this site the blame will probably be put on lower level site managers and not the upper management of Wynn. I'm pretty sure that Wynn Corporation itself is not micro managing the construction techniques of the contractors that they hire. Though they may push for unrealistic timelines, which could increase pressure for the contractors to cut corners.
