This is in fact a temporary installation, done by the same artists as last year's giant see-saws, and the "hamster wheels" from earlier this winter.

Last year: "Impulse" (one of the pictures on their site is from the seaport)

January: "Loop"

Current: "Prismatica"

These were sponsored by Boston Seaport.

I was part of the team that installed and removed the "Loop" installation, and we will be removing this "Prismatica" installation the morning of April 2nd.

Nathaniel, thanks for your post and for being part of the team who's involved with this. Any plans for spring, summer art installations in the Seaport?

Nothing that I've heard of - I believe these installations are their attempt to "activate" the area in the winter, when people might not otherwise be outside.

That being said, I wouldn't hear about anything more than a month or so in advance anyway.

“What Boston’s booming Seaport District doesn’t have though are some of city’s most critical services, according to a several city councilors.”

“There’s no school, library, community center, nor are there any police or fire stations.”

“There are no ball fields if kids want to play baseball or basketball,” Michael Flaherty, an at-large city councilor, said Wednesday. “There’s not even a polling location.”

“Plans to change that will be at the center of an upcoming City Council hearing, which Flaherty, along with councilors Ed Flynn and Michelle Wu requested during a meeting Wednesday.”

“They anticipate the discussion will revolve around scouting out locations in the Seaport for those services and building partnerships, they said.”

“A Trader Joe’s representative named Andrew Tobias has applied to the Fort Point Landmark Commission proposing to reopen historic windows, relocate entrances and awnings, and install historic signage at 44 Thomson Place. The commission meets Thursday evening.”

You're right. It's not great. But, if you're getting a curtain wall to match the building with a couple of thin row of windows vs glass.... maybe glass will look nicer. In the world of 'let's screw up a prominent building,' there's 88 Boylston, the Pierce, Data Science bldg, 1 Kenmore, etc.....

This much density/revenue/life to rise from such a morbid dead stump is a great thing.

Yes, apparently when planning the future city they left out the planning part.

Basketball court and playground.

Playground (under construction).

How many baseball fields are in, say, the Back Bay? Does that make the Back Bay a failure?

Police Station. State Police, and not Boston Police, jurisdiction of the Seaport is an issue for the Governor that has absolutely nothing to do with planning or zoning.

The last thing BPS wants or needs is more school buildings.

Now I've always assume that it was deliberately planned that way. It was supposed to be a mini-city perpetually inhabited by the young and single w/o kids or need for things like community centers, libraries, etc. As long as there were enough gyms, bars and restaurants, it's all good.

Come on, a single half-court to me does not really fulfill the vocation of a city park.

We've learned nothing from the planning blunders of the last century. Does it not seem like a death sentence, however protracted, as soon as one begins to say, "and here we will put this kind of person, who requires these services, and we won't hook up any of the others to save a few bucks"? We should be trying to seed a garden, not plopping down legos. Whether intentional or not, this kind of oversight is a planning failure.

On the Playground front, Martin's Park appears destined to become one of the premiere playgrounds in the city. The baseball fields in Boston Common are as far from parts of the Back Bay as they are from parts of the Seaport (~1 mile), and Seaport residents are that same distance away from South Boston's Medal of Honor Park/Chrisopher Lee Playground ball fields... Evans Field just a little further away. We're talking a 5-minute bike ride from PWC.
