Rebuilt 1986-88. That is the only date that matters...actual vs. projected service life past overhaul. The 01500/01600's are mechanically younger than the never-rebuilt Orange Line cars. They're past end of life, but 1960's frames aren't the reason...late-1980's parts that've used up their rated duty cycles are. And rebuilt in the last 5 years. The 01700's are not at end of life or past rebuild age. Their rebuilds are good for 10 years with the early cars from the rebuild program slated for retirement right at the end of those 10 years. Right now they are the BEST condition of the fleet. They could have been rebuilt for >10 year life extension, but parts are getting scarce for DC traction vehicles so it was better to go minimal.

With a 25-year rated initial lifespan. This year, 2019, is year 24-25. They're not EOL yet, and will only be 2 years over at retirement (not a problem).

There a ton of problems with insufficient RL investment writ-large, but this 50years!50years!50years! meme is hysterical distortion. The 015/016's are in deplorable condition...because riding a rebuild 32 years is enough of a travesty. But trains do not have model years like cars, so the year the aluminum shell was pressed does not dictate years of roadworthiness.

There WAS talk sometime back that the old Orange Line cars were going to get a makeover, but they never did. The rust was going to be taken off them, the motors were going to be rebuilt or replaced & the interiors would've been spruced up. And they were going to be repainted.

But none of this has ever happened. They are old, dirty, dilapidated, antiqued & outdated! No need to do that now. Good money after bad!! :eek::eek::eek:

Wow... come on. I do not understand the graffiti thing. It looks like shit, and whenever things in your city get graffitied it instantly makes your city look more poor, dirty, and crime ridden. What is the point of that? Why go out of your way to waste your time making things look crappier. This is one fad I wish would die. Murals look good, actual graffiti on subways, bridges etc.. ALWAYS looks like shit. Just stop please.
 
If they got the balls to graffiti the Tobin Bridge, then they got the balls to try to destroy new things that haven't even gone into revenue service!! Where are the T police when you need them?!! :mad::mad:

And on the brand new ones? I mean that's someone willfully causing realistically thousands of dollars of damage for no reason whatsoever and it looks trash. I wouldn't be too bothered if it was some old cars that already have aging paintwork but what a waste to do it to brand new cars with brand new paintwork, even if it's "easy" to remove it's still time and money wasted.
 
I grew up in a tough public housing project where there was a lot of vandalism and graffiti, (but before spray paint was invented, mostly cigarette burns on walls, pens, etc.), and it really degraded the place. The project kids tore down every tree the housing authority tried to plant, carved up the main front doors to all the multi-unit buildings, and generally ruined much of everything else. Eventually all the front yards had to be paved over because nothing green could survive the vandalism. I despise that kind of mindless shit, never did it myself and have never understood why anyone would.

Ah yes and everyone knows there is no possible way to get around a locked fence. None at all, locked fences are 100% foolproof security, can't climb them, go under them, go around them, cut through them, etc

The Pompeii graffiti at least said something in the time it was written. Nowadays we apparently just scrawl our names. Not even our real ones.
