Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

I'd be very surprised if Breeze ends up Logan especially initially. From what I have read of their plans, it seems like places like Portsmouth or Worcester make more sense than Logan as far as possible local airports go. Providence could work for them too.

GSO has great “northeast affinities” as an early “back office” financial center and more recently a retiree hub. GSP is better insulated from retaliation by AA CLT and WN RDU

Lousiville has the larger metro GDP but is it leisurely enough?(Nasville would make more sense as a leisure-business hub)

My favorite “further south” destination is Savanna GA (Hilton Head / retiree / beaches),

Delta announced some additions and resumptions today for this summer. Most routes start first week of May.

Resuming Savannah, Myrtle Beach and Norfolk as weekly Service. Norfolk will increase to daily.
Resuming Bangor ME as daily service (last served 2009)
Adding weekend Hilton Head and Traverse City, MI service.

Aer Lingus Boston-Manchester UK on A321neoLR will launch Summer 2022. There was thought maybe this summer but its probably a good idea to wait. Orlando and JFK will start Summer 2021.

So here's a question - how does this mesh with JetBlue's plans for BOS-London?

EI is a partner with JetBlue, but they are also partners with United.

They're also part of the Oneworld Transatlantic joint venture which includes American, British Airways, Finnair, and Iberia. Between the fuel efficient narrow body A321 Neo and the glut of partnerships, it might actually help make Manchester-Boston a success where others have failed. In addition to O&D traffic from Boston, you have American, Jetblue, and United (though the article I linked speculated a potential end to the United partnership) feeding the route from all over the U.S. I'm not sure it should have much impact on JetBlue's London operations since both Boston and London are giant O&D markets, plus you still have JetBlue feeding that route via it's domestic network out of Boston.

In Google's satellite, COVID-era view of Logan, there is not a single plane at a gate.

My guess is they were removed through image manipulating/programming, much like they do for cars on streets and parking lots, though this looks really well done. I'd find it hard to believe that there were no cargo planes around.

One other observation ... imagery is pre-pandemic. No evidence of construction at Terminal E and the gas station is still there.

Definitely this, look at the highways around Logan. All the vehicles are gone.

Awesome for vaccinated Boston travellers since they will be allowed into Iceland but I think it could be overrun by USA tourists this summer if the rest of Europe is still struggling with this recent wave and Astrazeneca skepticism.

JetBlue has gained slots at Heathrow. Will be interesting to see when they finally announce firm plans for London service and also if they intend to serve both Heathrow and Gatwick.

Good write up on it. I thought that JetBlue was only going to do one city in S21 based on A321LR availability though Primera flew regular A320's in summer months.

'tis explained, somewhat.

Its my understanding that the 3d maps are created from mixture of photos taken at all 4 angles. If the plane is only there for one of the photos then it is taken out. It's the reason you don't see many cars driving on the road or people in places. Ironically if you look at heathrow terminal 3 there are some interesting looking planes that are the result of merges - AA on one side and BA on another. CX tail with BA titles.

another observation on airliners.net is that Google doesn't seem to remove planes at military airfields.

Jet Blue would need some wide body jets if they start flying to London from BOS, JFK, MIA. Six and a half hours in a cramped single aisle would be shitty.

They are not getting widebodies; they are specifically getting long range narrowbodies for this. Many east to west coast flights are on narrowbodies and exceed 6 hours regularly. Also, JetBlue has better legroom than many widebodies in economy and their new business class looks really good and on par with other larger widebody airline cabins.

BOS-LHR is no longer than BOS-LAX... a rounding error if anything. Although I've flown wide bodies internationally (747, 777, 787, and A380), I think JetBlue's A321 economy product are just as comfortable and comparable to their larger competitors. They're definitely more comfortable than the WOW fleet I frequented when connecting to mainland Europe.

That WOW A321 was dreadfully uncomfortable, even on the short BOS-KEF route.

Nah, many airlines currently do BOS to Western Europe on a narrow body. It's really not drastically different from BOS-LAX in terms of time and that's almost exclusivelly narrow body service across the board. Jetblue's Economy product is better than many TATL widebody economy products, it'll be fine on their A321 Neos. Range wise, it's possible even on their A220s, but I don't think we'll see that plane on any TATL routes any time soon (In fantasyland, I'd love BOS-LCY on a B6 or DL A220).
