Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Gilman square stop at School street - looks like steel going in for the elevator footbridge. Will it cross over the tracks and connect from the community path or will the bridge connect from the bridge?

11/2021 with what looks like A LOT of work left to be done.

Too bad the original anticipated '2021' opening date couldn't be held.

Aw well; at least it looks like it will open... eventually. (~positive thoughts~)

I think that would be anybody's guess. Taken with a grain of salt.

Updated MBTA map at ruggles, with glx D to union, E to Medford, new chelsea CR transfer stop, new gl bu stop spacing.

"The specific branch assignments are a reversal from earlier plans, which called for extending the D branch to Medford and the E branch to Union Square. Asked about the switch, Pesaturo said Friday that the D branch — which is by far the longest arm of the four Green Line branches — was assigned to the shorter extension to Union Square to make it a more reasonable length for trains."

“A shorter trip than the D branch, E branch trains have been assigned to the longer leg of the extension (Medford),” Pesaturo said in an email."

^ Does anyone find it odd that the new map does not indicate that the GLX stops are not open yet?

The less stickers the better, IMO. The leftover residue from them usually doesn't look great, and for a brand new sign to have stickers seems backwards to me. This was also put up under the assumption there would only be a few months between the sign being up and the opening. For the few inexperienced riders between 4/2021 and now that have been looking to go to Medford via Orange-Green, I'm sure it was an inconvenience once they got to Haymarket or North Station, but how many riders is that, factoring COVID ridership and the prospective popularity of that route?

Why do the squares on GLX get a "Sq" tagged on the end and all the other stops at squares don't? Nitpicky but they should be consistent.

Looks to me like all the stations with "Square" as part of their official signed names got "Sq" on the map, whereas a bunch of stops at squares that don't have "Square" in their names didn't. Unless I missed some of them, it seems like it's consistent with the station names, but that they inconsistently use "Square" as part of station names.

The "official signed names" reasoning is probably right, but by your logic, shouldn't all the "circle" stops drop circle, as well?

I mean, it'd be nice if they had some internal consistency as to how they named stations. At least with the "Square" ones there's consistency between the official signed names and the maps, even if there's inconsistency with which ones get "Square" as part of the name. As for "Circle", both Cleveland Circle and Brigham Circle (the two that come to mind with "Circle" as part of the official name) both have it on the map as well, which is still internally consistent. (Though, weirdly, Ashmont is signed as Ashmont/Peabody Sq, but only "Ashmont" is used on maps or online.) Consistency does not appear to be a strong suit across the system, why should the GLX be any different 🙃

I hope theyre going to dress up that grey mechanical box to make it blend in to the street wall. Little easter eggs like that are cool to spot around the city, especially the ones that are dressed up really well. This one reminds me of the one directly across from the landsdowne station for the green line tunnels. Its a big grey box too, but they added a brick facade, corniche, window frames, fake doorway arch…etc. They prob should have painted the windows black or something, but either way this one is pretty cool. I love stuff like this.

Could not agree more. And now, thx for allowing me to vent: That grey box is a disaster and a total misuse of pedestrian space. What was the thinking behind this…”let’s pick the prime intersection of this square and plop down an anti-pedestrian non-public inaccessible monolithic 3-story cinderblock.”
