Biking in Boston

Yes, I think it will be really nice. The benefit from the pilot is that they now have data about traffic flow, which should help assuage community concerns about the lane diet. I would really like the city to try again on Centre St. in West Roxbury, maybe using the same approach.

Yaboo Fence (try not to hear that in a Captain Caveman voice) out of Nyack New York is doing the installs. That seems like a heck of a hike for a fence contract.

Is it just me, or is the community path extension ridiculously narrow? I could be wrong, and maybe I should reserve judgment until its completion, but given the potential for it to be a heavy-use commuter corridor, this stretch is one where I think we really would have been better to go wide and induce non-vehicular demand. I realize the size of the right-of-way might be a challenge, but damn it looks like a lot of wasted space in some sections.

As a corollary, does anyone know if the path will have "shoulders?" That's a sharp drop off the pavement onto loose ballast for a cyclist who misjudges the edge. Yikes.

Whoever sells the black chain link fence is ready to retire in the Caribbean after this contract
It is very bare-bones and basic compared to the North Bank Pedestrian Bridge nearby:

Yeah, Friends of the Community Path, STEP and the other advocacy groups put a ton of pressure on the state to make the path wider, but they were all "we'd have to completely redesign it, it would cost a lot of money, tough noogies". That inbound downgrade is going to be fun and excitement on Monday mornings.

For those who have been following, Cambridge is pushing forward with putting up protected bike lanes across Mass Ave (they added quick-build separated lanes between Central and Harvard last fall) and will do Porter Square next in short order. As a resident that bikes to work these lanes have been wide, comfortable, and heavily used.

Still getting pushback from local businesses - if only we could just emphasize the fact that new bike lanes = fewer people in cars = lighter car traffic & faster car trips, I can't imagine any of these boomers complaining any longer.

Quick question, I am looking to bike into the downtown area, maybe somewhere along Charles St near MGA and lock my bike up so I can go do some exploring. Am curious if I should be worried about anyone trying to cut the lock, steel the front wheel, or otherwise vandalize the bike. It's an expensive ride that I would rather not have messed with, so if it's risky I'd love to know. Thanks in advance.

I'm a boomer and ride my bike a lot, and support the bike lanes. I don't blame you for id'ing the boomers, because we have, and continue to, mess things up generally, but there are a few of us who aren't couch potatoes. :)

You should worry no matter where it is. Get a lock that can't be cut quickly with a bolt cutter. A quality U-Lock is the best bet.

Fenway section of boylston parking protected bike lanes installation started on Monday.

My main route involves Columbus. I really miss the temporary parking protected lanes up near bay village - there’s so little traffic there that there’s no need for multiple lanes on that street. Plus the section through the south end is a nightmare of double parked cars. The section along northeastern needs more daylighting at the crosswalks and intersections. It’s hard to see pedestrians especially if someone parks a giant SUV van. Anyone know if Columbus is going to get improvements this year?

Thank God! Drove it on Saturday. That section of Boylston is a minefield for bikes right now! Between the varying widths and ad-hoc turnouts, the pot-holery, the UberEats pickups, agro drivers and gameday parking spot trawlers it’s one of the most treacherous street runs in the city. Avoid until fixed.
