Are there special exceptions/provisions/requirements in the fire code for a residential building this tall? I can't imagine that if there's a fire the residents in the higher floors are expected to descend a thousand-foot high stair.

I think you're expected to pour yourself a drink and wait for the flames to consume you, or grab your parachute and jump.

In case you're wondering, here's the fire evacuation plan for the Burj Khalifa. There's probably something similar in place for these towers.

As somebody who has been haunted by the videos of people leaping off the WTC, I always wondered what would be the feasibility of keeping some parachutes near the top of these supertalls? I see these people falling in my nightmares and always wish they could have just pulled a cord and floated away.

I'm guessing most people wouldn't be capable of using a parachute in a pinch like that.

Yeah but at least they'd have a chance! It would have to be something simple, like a strap-on backpack with a cord. It sure beats the alternatives. Those people were jumping without parachutes or a prayer of survival.

Probably infeasible. You're just as likely to slam into a nearby high rise by the wind.

On another note... And please excuse the vent... What with Manhattan and it's absolute dearth of bike racks? I brought my scooter with me to NY this past weekend and frankly, basically could never find a thing to lock to that wasn't a street sign. There just aren't many bike parking things I could find. Other than that, there's lots of cycle infrastructure, though I have to admit much doesn't make sense to me. Lots of bike lanes... seemingly sparsely used. Admittedly, weekend, but the weather was nice. Very few people apart from messengers and delivery people on ebikes seems to use them. Often, I'd be the only thing in them for blocks on end.

Also, The side switching thing though is a problem. In conventional bike lanes, it's often the same thing as if you're sharing the road, bikes to the right. Why then are all the protected lanes, and some of the conventional ones, on the left? Yes it's all one ways, but driver doors open more than passenger ones, and right turns involve turning across traffic. It got sketchy a couple of times.

That said, the citiBikes (bluebikes) seem well patronized, but not more so or denser than Boston. The ebike option is cool too. Would be great for Brookline.

Base jumping is viable above something like 250' so if you can break through a window and know what you're doing you'll be able to see your neighbors faces pressed against the windows as you glide away.

If I had $100M to burn on housing it wouldn't be spent on that thing. Though I'm guessing this is one of many properties for the owners.

New official renderings for JPMorgan Chase's headquarters at 270 Park Ave just dropped. The tower itself is interesting in shape and how it expresses it's structure, and I'm into how it is raised off the ground like 175 Park, but that ground floor is a disgustingly empty no-man's land.

For some reason I read this as a temple (not to capitalism) or similar religious building. I must have seen pics of some temple that resembles this but I don't remember what it was. Anyone have any idea what I might have been looking at?

Maybe you are thinking of Hallgrímskirkja in Iceland?

I'm of two minds about all these monumental structures NYC has been constructing lately (the Vessel, the Shed, now this and possibly others I don’t know about). On the one hand they’re very cool and original structures. On the other hand, they have an air of overbearing grandiosity about them, like this is what Albert Speer would be designing if he were alive today, just curved instead of rectilinear.

As a counterexample, the Bean does a good job of being monumental without being overbearing or grandiose, as does Millenium Park in general. All the New York stuff just seems excessive by comparison. Maybe the city is still trying to compensate for the loss of the WTC, or something along those lines.

The latest Penn Station proposed renovation & expansion - most of the build out will be accumulated / taking of the surrounding blocks and creating special zoning for unlimited height towers! looking at 18 million sf +!! Sounds like another world trade center under taking, I wonder if the Manhattan waterfront will be expanding again. The latest big headlines are who will pay for it; the fight has begun.
