^ at the same time boston is a tiny city and they may be looking out for the next hundred years because if we start building fast its gonna be crammed, theres plenty of time to slowly keep building up the skyline.

Stick n move, I hear what your saying, but I'm alive now. Developers talk about 20 years like its nothing. In 20 years a lot of these guys are old men or dead.

No...there certainly demand especially when vacancy once hit 5%. It's whether the public will allow it or not.

The real problem is Menino and the BRA they are trying to control which developers build in the city and height of the buildings. It's actually becoming very disturbing what is going on in the city.

The BRA won't talk about the Columbus project and the Dianne Wilkerson Bribes that were going on since M. Coakley gave her a slap on the wrist.

Then you have Liberty Mutual who wants to build more space, granted the city is almost at 15% commercial vacancy so Menino gives them a 15 million dollar tax break. Nothing makes sense. Our politicians are just out for themselves they do not care about making a better city they just care what they are getting out of it.

I have said this before if it wasnt for the colleges in Boston this city would end up like Detroit.

Directors included Joan Belkin and Steven B. Belkin. Belkin, a Boston businessman who founded Trans National Group in the 1970s, was also an owner of the NBA's Atlanta Hawks and the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers, until an ownership split last year.

Trans National is represented in the bankruptcy by Harold B. Murphy of Murphy & King in Boston.

Riff -- the story seems to be crafted to create just such a reaction by the reader -- an alternative perspective is given in the story in the Herald:

" Steve Belkin’s Trans National Communications International Inc., a Boston telecom provider, has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The company, which listed $10 million to $50 million in debt and $1 million to $10 million in assets, plans to reorganize as soon as possible and has no plans for layoffs at this time, according to a spokesman.

Trans National Communications employs about 100 people, including 80 in Boston.

The 20-year-old company, which made the 2001 Inc. 500 list of the fastest-growing privately held companies, represents a small percentage of Belkin’s holdings.....

“This is not a Trans National issue,” said Alan Eisner, Belkin’s spokesman. “This is a telecom issue affecting many switchless resellers in which elements of their contracts with the big phones companies are being disputed.”

Trans National Communications International’s 20 largest creditors are owed more than $13.6 million, according to court documents. Sprint Communications, which is owed $5.04 million, tops the list."

Haha. You should have started with "No wait, there IS news about this project!".

I'm glad the Ye Olde Boston Coalition Against Shadows and Wind have so much to distract them right now! They won't even know which way to aim their pitchforks and torches and something might actually get built in this city. This project is still a long shot, IMO, but if it helps keep Copley, Filenes, etc moving than good!

I would bet between 700-750 ft will eventually happen. That range would be perfect for this location. Tall enough to break the plateau, yet not too dominating.

As usual, my only gripe with the Globe is that they react to any Boston building heights as if the actual numbers were in units of meters instead of feet. And mentioning the current construction of Waterside Place as comparable is laughable.

Otherwise, good news to wake up to this morning.

My vision for this site has always been an approx 925' mixed-use reflecting glass tower in the shape of an obelisk, preferably with a "sharp top" like the washington monument so it starts tapering to its point around 725'-750' and thus doesn't completely dwarf the buildings around it. The glass would be similar to that being used on 4 WTC. It would pay its respects to our current tallest (JHT), the financial district skyline similar to JHT does the Back Bay by reflecting it, all of Boston's current obelisks (Bunker Hill, Zakim Bridge, some at Copley, some at Harvard bridge, one on the common, think there are a ton more...) and would be the world's tallest obelisk so Menino could have something to wave his dick about.

And of course, the top of the obelisk would be a multi-story observation deck, maybe with a bar/restaurant on the lower part.

I'm trying to get a guy on skyscraperpage to create renders for me but he was busy before and I am on a waiting list. I sent him the link to hopefully speed him up.

What's the possibility of including residences at the top of this building? 40-45 floors of office +40 of residences gives you about 800 feet. Atlantic Wharf and the devonshire isn't very, and i think with everything on dtx and SPID going, it would have a residential appeal.

Or is this out of the question?

Boston needs something iconic. It's great that the Hole is back on track, but I don't think that project will be anything to write home about. We need a new building that people automatically know means Boston.

I wish I didn't feel so pessimistic about this project...but I do. I feel like this is SST redux (not so much that there are many more obstacle that SST has to go through but the frequent revival followed by long periods of nothing).

Couple of notes:

*This location groundfloor will $uck. I'm not crazy about this area. The garage is like a deadspot in the city.
*We should build as high as the FAA gives us on this location.

Congress Street & Harbor Garage, Filenes Hole are the most important spots in the city and we should be focusing on something Iconic in those locations right now. That does not mean unlimited height. Something of a statement for the city of Boston. (since the innovation district will become a bunch of box buildings on the water) Great vision
Those development spots support massive amounts of passing foot-traffic daily.

The BRA really has no clue what they are doing.
So tell me why would they focus their energy on building an iconic building in a spot that does not support massive amounts of foot-traffic on a daily basis. People have to go out of their way to find this Iconic structure that Belkin is looking to build.

I feel that "iconic" pertains more to how a tower looks on the skyline than how is feels at street level...

Something Iconic pertains in my opinion on the entire tower......the Skyline, the location, and the building inside and out.

This is what seperates 2nd & 3rd rate to 1st rate
