Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

Yea I know, I'm just in a dreamin' kind of mood...it's the mood I'm always in whenever I think of development in Boston.

Exactly. We all KNOW we're discussing and dissecting a rendering that will never get built. If we were limited to only talking about projects that were going to get built, this site would see as much traffic as a dead end street.

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

Damn, I haven't seen anything that ridiculously boring in...ever, actually. It's just so regular. Even for CBT!

'okay i want to make the tallest tower in boston.....but i don't want to spend a lot of money'

How Boston looking.

Have no fear, my "ultimate-Boston" design is still up for sale:

Toby likes it, but he hasn't ponied up for the rights yet. This could be yours Belkin!

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

^^That is certainly untrue. You can have a roof garden without it being a box. While it may be a stretch, the under construction Shanghai Tower includes 9 gardens. In fact, I believe Gensler's proposal for the Congress Street Garage includes a sky garden. Just to note, the Shanghai tower is also designed by Gensler. I think they should hire Gensler for this one.

The Marina Bay Sand's complex features roof gardens and pools atop on a 2 acre "sky park" spread across 3 very unboxlike towers. So it can be done, by Boston's own <GAG> starchitect Moshie Safdie. It's up over 40 storeys right now I believe. Can't wait til they start hoisting the park into place.

Sorry, got a little off topic there.

Cute little fellow, isn't he?

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

With cuts ahead, Menino talks of ?transformation?

The annual address to the research bureau has long been a forum for the mayor to unveil some of his loftier dreams, but yesterday he focused on more modest ideas that will directly affect neighborhoods. Menino noted the difference in tone by poking fun at himself, veering from his prepared remarks to remind the audience of his 2006 pitch for a new 1,000-foot tower downtown.

?Remember that one? That was a good one,?? Menino quipped, eliciting a ripple of laughter from the audience. ?What happened was the FAA said we couldn?t do it. I have no control over the FAA.??

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

Kind of sad proposing a 1000 ft tower in Boston is a joke. Plenty of lesser cities have them.

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

^Really? I think Chicago, NYC and Houston (and maybe Atlanta) are the only cities in the US that have 1000' towers. Where's the "plenty of lesser cities?"
And if you're talking about international cities, isn't that more of an indictment on America than Boston?

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

Well, if we're lax about it and say "in the ballpark of 1,000 ft" then you can throw Philly, Cleveland and to a lesser extent Dallas and Seattle in the mix, which would make GW's comment ring true.

OTOH, you could turn around and say if San Fran's tallest is "only" 850ish feet, then we're doing just fine sitting around 800.

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

Not positive on any ,but Miami does, I heard Charolette is cool, but still it's not as "grand" as Boston, and that has Bank of America. Also Memphis has or is getting one. I mean can we ever top the Hancock, let us step into something that we are truely worthy of a super tall. And yes plenty of other things go into making a city great.

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

Menino is full of it. If Belkin could have pulled it off that tower would be under construction right now. The FAA nonsense is just an indirect shot at Chiofaro's proposal.

Good point - all over 900 feet. And all cities Boston should be able to match up with. But still saying that "plenty of lesser cities have 1000-ft towers" when there are exactly four is a stretch.

According to Emporis:
Miami's tallest is under 800 ft.
Memphis' tallest is under 500 ft.
Charlotte's tallest is 870 ft.

I think he is more frustrated that many lower cities have a more realistic proposal to build towers greater in height than the JH. OKC is getting 850ft tower. Nashville had a supertall planned. Philly has a 1500ft proposal, etc etc.

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

The origional design is basically a blatent attempt at making it have the boston "look" by simply throwing the top of the prudential on the john hancock and adding an off center spire and some x bracing. I definately liked the observation deck with the trees it had, but the off center spire doesnt fit with boston at all. With the right supertall boston goes from okay to one of the greatest looking cities in america. Think of how it would look from across the charles river with instead of two highrises in a row theres three and one is downtown. The possibilities boston has is insane. They should use this design and get rid of the outside elevator and put a central spire on it so it fits in more with the two buildings it is mimicking.

I whipped this up in paint in under a minute just as a rough idea of what it would look like

Too bad Boston didn't get the 1000' building, or the nice tall modern looking ones proposed at the gov center parking garage, or Filenes, or Columbus Center, or anything at North Station, or anything at the Aquarium Garage, or the tall condo proposed for Copley Place, or SST, or.... Maybe all would not have been great, maybe some would have been bad for business with too much space, but not getting any of these projects says something about the people who run and live in the city, they are timid and small minded.
