Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Isn't change the word of the word of the day/week/year isn't it?

All the rah rah cheerleaders in support of development are probably right. What's worse? A mistaken development that visually detracts from the city that also causes some inconveniences to traffic or negating a project that would have, should have, enlivened the area, bolstered city coffers when the economy is in the TOILET and possibly sent a message to the decision makers around the country and world about viability of the area in a time of chaos?

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Boston's petulant NIMBY population needs to listen to the president they probably voted for and "put away childish things".

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

It is still entirely possible for someone not currently on the political stage to come forward, launch a campaign and be elected mayor in this election year. That is a change that would invigorate this city.

Yes, I know things have to happen at a grassroots level, but unless there is a sweeping change at the top that redirects the focus of the city, we'll be stuck where we are.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

The Boston Demographics play out in this city. There are 3 types of voters in this city.
#1 The educated people are mostly visitors who go to school in the city. They are unlikely to vote; either not registered or are likely to leave the city anyway because of cost of living.
#2 The city workers who continue to vote for this idiot because they are scared to lose their city jobs.
#3 The broke and uneducated people. They are easily duped by their local politicians.

Boston should be the #1 city in the world. We have the best schools, medical institutions, sports, and it?s a very historical place. Very Very Sad

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Can Chiafaro run and build the Boston of his dreams?

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

I was wondering that myself, but he doesn't live in the city. Does anyone of any significance actually live in this city?

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

The city limits are so small that no one of significance lives within city borders. So sad.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Well, Tom Brady lives in Back Bay, if this is where he lists his primary residence then Giselle should be eligible to run for mayor in a couple of months ;)

More seriously though, knowing lots of people who actually live in the city limits, I would say the majority fall into a separate category. Educated, well paid, who prefer an urban lifestyle and whose lives aren't adversely affected by Menino. I bet if I asked everyone in my building their thoughts on a tower replacing the Aquarium garage #1 no one would have even heard of the proposal and #2 no one would really care either way.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

I nominate Tobyjug for mayor. If nothing else, we will at least be guaranteed a beer garden will be built in City Hall. :)

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

I humbly accept the nomination as the Free Beer Party candidate.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Although I wouldn't put it quite so cynically, I think Rifleman's nailed this one right on the head.

The suburban neighborhoods rule in this city.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

West Roxbury in particular. They have crazy voter turn out...and the pols know it.
Though I wouldn't call them "the broke and uneducated people" (as I am a native of the area). Broke folks can't afford W. Roxbury. There are quite a few that fall into #2, but mostly people from Westie are just selfish and insulated from the rest of the city (as in "we'll take your police and fire protection, but otherwise keep your 'city ways' out, thankyouverymuch".)

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

So what you're saying is that Boston's mediocrity is the result of people getting the government they deserve??

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

^ The U.S. electorate just got through eight years of the government it deserved.

I was going to to use that exact phrase, in fact. Assuming that this democracy thing is working as designed, it is the sad fact of the matter.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

If you think about it, you could say the electorate pretty much always gets the government it deserves. The public in its wisdom vs. the twisted politicians: I don't buy that myth.

The public shows its stupidity when it elects these rascals. It's not so hard to tell when someone's off-kilter.

A careful reading of Lincoln's famous dictum reveals it's both cynical and pessimistic: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time ... but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

Faint praise from a sad man; the best he could say about the public: "you can't fool all of them all the time."

Even Goebbels knew that.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

^^^^^^^^

I'll agree that we get the government we deserve, most of the time...but not in 2000! The public voted for Gore but Bush was given the presidency by 5 justices on the Supreme Court! Now, 2004 is a different story!!

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

The way the economy is heading if any developer has the financing for a project of this magnitude I would suggest the BRA start working harder and try to fast track these projects down the pipeline.

The way DTX is looking these days (Drug addicts & Gang members roaming our streets)........Fan Pier development nothing excites me about that area at all.

Hopefully Boston can start seeing the LIGHT instead of heading into the Dark Ages.

Look, I know Toby has a bit of a drinking problem, but I think you are being a bit harsh.
