Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

It would be a good way to make over City Hall, with all that green droopy stuff!

Indeed. All that concrete makes for thermal mass, a key component in green building.

Yeang is among the brightest architects working today. Bringing him to Boston for a large-scale project would be huge. Interestingly, much of his work in Southeast Asia grows out of Paul Rudolph's late work, a hybrid of high-tech and critical regionalism.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Although, I read somewhere that he prefers working in the tropics. And I doubt he'd care to deal with the BRA. And there's no one with the money for him here. But hey, one can dream.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Couldn't we greenscape with winter vegetation? Evergreens, coniferous bushes, etc.?

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Evergreens aren't typically part of urban plantings because of the lack of a canopy for people to dwell underneath during the warmer months.

Planting them as a useful windbreak might also suggest that the all-mighty BRA failed to appropriately judge wind gusts as part of the design approval process. Despite the practical application of correcting a mistake, those hacks will always be against approving anything that points a failure on their part.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

But, planting native vegetation that requires little to no human interference to grow is part of the LEED design process. So maybe we will see more of the trees and shrubs you mentioned in town.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Seems like our Mayor is determine to fight to keep this project from getting off it's feet. Typical Politician...........I still would like to see the Renderings to this project?

Mayor Thomas M. Menino: ?Neighborhood process? applies
Tower plan draws fire

A developer?s dream to build a pair of skyscrapers overlooking the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway is off to a rough start.

Donald J. Chiofaro said he hopes to replace the Boston Harbor Garage, near the New England Aquarium, with a $900 million mixed-use development.

But so far the idea has angered Mayor Thomas M. Menino, whose support is crucial for any project. ?I have real concerns,? Menino said. ?We have a planning process under way and he should be part of it. No one is bigger than the neighborhood process.?

In December, the Boston Redevelopment Authority selected a consultant, who in cooperation with the neighborhoods, is expected to establish height and density guidelines for projects in the area once bordering the Southeast Expressway.

?We told Don that he should delay his proposal for a few months until we have more information from the zoning study that we can share with him,? said John F. Palmieri, BRA director. ?But he resisted.?

The other factor that has raised red flags at City Hall is that Chiofaro has failed to share plans of the project with the abutting North and West End neighborhoods.

Nancy Caruso, a North End resident and chairwoman of the North End Central Artery Advisory Committee, said the only thing she knows about Chiofaro?s proposal is what she has read in the newspapers. ?We haven?t seen anything,? she said.

Unlike the Raymond Co., which held six community meetings prior to filing plans with the BRA for replacing the Government Center Garage, Chiofaro has not shared his idea in public meetings. He has declined to release an artist?s rending of the towers or provide the building?s height.

Typically, developers share their ideas first with city and state officials and then with the community, according to Vivian Li, executive director of the Boston Harbor Association.

?I don?t understand how he?s going to roll it out,? she said. ?It?s going to be a very long process.?

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

We should be a first rate city with all of our colleges and medical facilities in this area but it seems we are still second fiddle to other cities.

Despite all the intelligent people in this area, the city is run by the barely literate. The leadership of this city does not reflect the change to the demographics, and remains lost in another era. If it stays there, we will be lucky if we are second fiddle, and not third or fourth.

Amen to that! Boston is going backwards because of these provincial politicians, cronies, and backward looking neigborhood activists...

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Did I miss the violent revolution when Menino overthrew our duly elected leader and seized power?

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

I'm surprise anything gets built in this city, other cities would luv to have developer's throwing projects at them! And they would actually build them! I'm surprise we even have a skyline!

No you missed the part where the political machine made it nearly impossible for an outsider to run for mayor.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

True, I was a bit young for the Curley era.

There is a black man in the White House today. Ain't nothing impossible.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

I agree - nothing is impossible.

I have never understood why someone with a lot of money (like a Bloomberg) has never come into this town and run for mayor. Is there anyone in the business community in this city - not another hack - who might like to be mayor? Someone with money and connections who wants a nice new title on their resume?

Anyone???

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

Maybe Abigail Johnson of Fidelity? She was named one of the richest women in the country a couple years ago...although I haven't heard anything about her in a long time.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

I think she has her hands full at Fidelity. If for some reason she did not take over from her father, she might be inclined.

It's an interesting suggestion.

Re: New tower at Aquarium parking garage.

She lives in Milton; I know that's not relevant to what you're saying, but thought I'd point it out.
