BCEC expansion | Seaport

All that above is true about building up. But there is no reason D street shouldn't be lined with a bunch of new storefronts. The area has changed so much in the 10 or 12 years since this thing showed up. This is the hottest neighborhood (ok second because Fenway I think took the lead, but the possibilities here pass that) being built in the city. Retail, food, bars all along this strip as mentioned above. For those coming from southie proper plus all those venturing from the seaport. That and the thousands of conventioneers. They tend to spend lots of time and money in restaurants and bars.

All of the current developments on D will have significant retail.. Flats on D, the two hotels as well As the proposed garage next to the hotels. Not sure about the BCEC side, but the outside event space will help tremendously.

I'm curious as to what the Blue tower in the rendering is. Possibly could be tge Westin expansion. If so, it is very likely that there would be retail at the bottom floors in that building as well.

A reason why there is no solar is that the roof leaked like a sieve when the BCEC first opened, very upsetting to the event planners.

Amd could be that the BCEC would insist on indemnification if a solar installation again caused the roof to leak. The cost of that might be enough to scare away any solar installers. After all, there would be no privately owned/operated nuclear power in the United States if the Federal government did not indemnify against the damages from a nuclear plant incident.

I agree about the hotel towers at the BCEC expansion's corners, especially if the hotel chains contributed to some of the cost of the expansion through it.

I've always thought attaching the casino to the convention center expansion was the most logical place for it.

Totally...would also add retail options and hotel rooms to the area...Everett and revere are the worst places possible to construct a casino.

Next to the football stadium? or perhaps as bookends on each side of the seaport?

At this point how about letting it evolve on its own with Private money.
We need housing bad in this state along with a massive overhaul of the MBTA Grid.

I do believe Patriots Stadium along with Patriots Place would have been Amazing in the Seaport along with the Casino. Which would justify a Massive MBTA Overhaul but Our leaders only think of themselves first.

Also could have built a Wrigley Field Community along the Stadium to dress it up.

I'm not sure if we would have anything different from the Silver Line if an NFL stadium was built in the Seaport. MassDOT seems to think the Silver Line is sufficient so you'd likely have a miserable transportation situation on game days.

edit: Also, I feel like a stadium would likely inhibit further development in the area because people would want a large amount of parking around the stadium, especially for the NFL where tailgating is popular.

Anyone know why the "d street lawn" park is only temporary?

Mmm. It's confusing. There doesn't seem to be an explicit plan for what will happen to the park; you have to read between the lines.

It looks as though it will be for an "expansion of existing Westin Hotel" from www.fortpointboston.com

More on the park and its "18-to-24 month" life.

I took my kids to the Lawn on D on Saturday. Live music, tons of lawn games and lawn furniture, free face painting, free balloon animals, free ice cream truck, free water bottles and snacks, free bouncy house, etc. etc. MCCA is working their ass off to generate good will in the community.
The beer tent will be open Thurs-Sunday nights. During the day the programming will be more family friendly.

P.S. The sod looked like it had just been put down. Now they're playing lawn games on it. They'll be putting down new sod again next spring.

Apparently, Lawn = Innovative. Just saying.

Programmed outdoor spaces like The Lawn on D are innovative. Unprogrammed are not. This is sorely needed in the area amid all the concrete roads/highway ramps and gigantic buildings. It's quite literally a breath of fresh air in the area. It's programmed beautifully, designed for people to inhabit and stay a while, rather than look at.

An "experiment" costing $1.1M for 1.5 summer seasons. Can someone explain what the "experiment" is that I'm missing? Or do we justify the cost by pretending it is an experiment?

Meanwhile, it's been impossible to convince BCEC officials (since Phase One) to fund improvements directly related to conventioneer experience. As one example, the notorious sidewalks of Summer St between South Station and BCEC, pitched and buckling today as they were the day BCEC opened.

Transit improvements quite possible for $1M might include public shuttle service between South Station and BCEC. Or signal prioritization timers for Silver Line.

Stay tuned Lawn on D fans as well as Uber, Airbnb and shared economy proponents. We can bank on new fees legislated in months/years ahead to pay for BCEC, as taxi medallion sales and hotel rooms do.

Sicilian, I'm sorry you're disappointed. That $1 million you want was loaned to the Boston Tea Party Museum because that has so much to do with the BCEC.
