Funny your right when everythings photographed the same it's hard for anything to look different. The best long range shot of this building and the Kensington are viewed from the Red Line just before the Charles MGH stop. Because of where the buildings are in the city from this perspective and how they compare to other buildings around you don't get the "favorite word of this forum" stump effect. Rather the buildings look taller and more prominent. Take a ride stumpers and let me know.
 
I don't recall this building was ever intended to make a statement or be prominent for anywhere except the intersection it sits above. It's infill on the westerly end of the High Spine. Parcels 12, 13 and 15 or the Berklee school's corner project are to be the things that should look different or make a statement.
 
This little jewel would have been real fine at 30 stories, same width.
 
No the building on the corner of Boylston and Mass Ave, was proposed for 38 stories, and it is still very much alive.
 
Here is How Boston Works:

50 stories proposed = cut to 38 stories
38 stories proposed = cut to 30 stories
30 stories proposed = cut to 24 stories
24 stories proposed = cut to 18 stories
18 stories proposed = cut to 14 stories
 
That must explain why the Filene's tower was "cut" from 38 stories to 52.

Do you have any actual data that backs up your previous assertion. Not anecdotes, not developer blustering - actual submitted applications that the BRA board demanded be reduced in height drastically. And we can eliminate Trans National Place and South Station Tower from this discussion as those projects never had a snowballs chance in hell of passing FAA muster.
 
The only building in bosons history to become taller than proposed. good call.
 
Not for 5 minutes did i believe SST or Trans National would become towers of that scale. They might one day be 300 footers.

- West Village at Northeastern
- International Village at Northeastern
- 1282 Boylston (u/c in Fenway) added a couple extra stories to its proposed height after approval.
- Mass Art Dorm I think must be taller than its original proposal (courtesy of mechanical suite)

These are a few from the last decade off the top of my head. And I'm confident there are others. Your previous assertion is baseless.
