Brookline Infill and Small Developments

Brookline High School new addition and new building. Sorry for the less than stellar quality. All taken from a car.

This is good news!

Love it! What an absolute treasure that place is.

This seems bigger than mere "infill" though. Almost a quarter of a million people each year already attend this theatre. Perhaps this one should this get it's own thread?

I'm all for kids having adequate buildings (and the education within is more important than aesthetics without) but this project is quite an aesthetic downgrade.

For context, the building they're tearing down looks like this:

On the town line between Boston & Brookline just off Comm Ave. 8/20. This project has taken a long time given its modest scale. Hate to see all that parking just a block from frequent bus / Green Line service.

I would cautiously dub this in the realm of "decent 21st century institutional style". I don't love it but I am more favorable toward it than neutral.

I do wish there had been left more room for tree plantings. That stretch of Cypress right there was quite leafy before construction (I think most of the trees were/are honey locust and have survived the project but hard to tell from the pics) and I hope those trees were retained and adequate room left to screen out the facade a bit. We don't do enough to add tree space to these big projects.

It has very similar elements to canopy u/c on the greenway with the brick, the kink in the middle, the orange accents next to the windows, and the glass on the ground floor.

Did they have to pick... cream for the mullion color?
Other than that, this is looking really nice. Better use of materials and proportions than the new Somerville high school.

The cream is in context with the rest of the main building minus the 90's addition that has white as its trim color.

I'm just so damn glad that those freakin power poles around the new school addition are coming down!! Good move by Brookline.

By the way, that new Tatte on Harvard Street is directly across from Kupels Bakery (Kosher)- - - interesting placement and rivalry between the new (local) chain and the old mom and pop. I'm rooting for both doing well. Perhaps Kupels has more phoned in/event orders and Tatte has more walk ups.
