Question:

Did BU ever redevelop their old rink? Is that where this building is now?

Nope, the old rink (Walter Brown Arena) is now home to the Women's team and is located on Babcock St.

The new rink is where the old Armory building was (which I had hoped would be incorporated into the design).

They incorporated minor elements of the old armory, like the gate and some of the decorative panels, into the landscape around the arena. I always liked the little moat style bridge of the armory.

Do they have eventually plans for its redevelopment? It seems like it would be costly to maintain strictly for woman's hockey (not a knock against woman's hockey--2 separate rink facilities just seems a little redundant to me.) They must use it as additional space for intramural/club, no?

I remember playing town hockey in that rink as a kid.

I dont think there are currently plans to re-develop it.

There is quite a demand for 'ice time' at BU for the different intramurals, both D1 hockey teams and a pretty robust figure skating program. So leaving Walter Brown as a rink enables more of the community to have access to time.

As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong) Agganis does not rent out ice time or host open skates at any regular intervals (although there is the occasional "take to the ice" events after Terrier Men's games).

Agganis Arena

Walter Brown Arena

Good points, i wasn't really looking at the big picture. It is often easy to forget how big a student body BU actually has.

Also, interesting fact, BU has the older basketball "stadium" located directly above Walter Brown Arena. It's even called The Roof.

Agganis Arena hosts "big" games for basketball. The Roof hosts all the rest.

So essentially they now have two stadiums for each sport, allowing for so much more flexibility in practice times as well as allowing the larger community time.

Just thought that was a unique situation (double decker stadium).

Agganis doesnt actually get used that much. I think some private company actually owns it.

Womens hockey plays all games at Brown Arena. Mens hockey practices at brown. Womens basketball plays all games at Case and most of mens basketball games are played at Case.

The old arena actually gets more use in the end then the new one, probably due to cost.

Agganis: owns or manages? I thought BU owned it, but outsourced the operation.

I think youre right. BU owns it but someone else runs it (they sell concerts and such).

Im not sure what agreement they have, but for some reason its cheaper to have low attendance games at the old arenas.

Does no one else think it's a pretty fugly entree to Boston from the Pike? Come on, it's yellow, it's precast, it's wide.

I like this.

It is pretty ugly. (I've always thought 93 North was pretty ugly). I've always enjoyed Storrow Dr from this direction though. What ever happened to Kevin White's "West Gate"?

It makes the drive in from the Pike exciting. It is somewhat ugly, not offensive (the yellow) and I like it at the same time.

West Gate?

When Kevin Lynch famously sketched out the idea for the "High Spine" he, on the same napkin, wrote out three grand entrance "gates" into Boston, one from the north, south, and west. The West Gate would have been right about at BU.

Decades later, the Zakim Bridge is a very effective North Gate. What did he envision for the South Gate, and where would it be?

I think it was more a theoretical proposal than an actual "build this" type proposal. This was Kevin Lynch afterall. I really want to post the map here but I can't find it on the interwebs. If anyone has the book Mapping Boston I'm sure it is in there.
