BU Development Thread

Yes, it seems, thanks to some pushing from BU. The IMP also notes that pedestrian volumes crossing the BU bridge intersection are up 80% in the last ten years. They have sketched out some plans to make the University Rd intersection (Storrow ramp) safer, and rerouting the traffic which currently comes up Carlton Street and makes a mess on the tracks every afternoon.

Well I like to have a bit more faith in engineers.

As for the Carlton Street Bridge to University Road/BU Bridge cluster****, why is Mountfort Street designed that all traffic is sent to the Carlton Street bridge instead of splitting or continue straight down Mountfort Street to the BU Bridge in the first place?

Please don't have so much faith in them. They are only human. And trained not to think about anything but movement of cars. Pedestrians are considered moving obstructions.

The arrangement of Mountfort/Carlton currently allows traffic from the west to reach Storrow EB with one fewer traffic signal (or stopping point) than would otherwise be required if Mountfort continued onto the BU bridge. But it produces the merging mess we see currently, so I'm not sure what they were thinking.

A few quick thoughts of the plan:

Absolutely no mention of the empty building in Kenmore square.

Like the idea of making the alley between comm and bay state into something useful.

Some hypocrisy as one page says "campus needs more green space" and a few pages later not one but two buildings are proposed on top of existing green space, which they call "unoccupied space"

Like that the beacon/bay state triangle of snow mountains will be made into a park.

Good to see improved connections to the esplanade.

Comm Ave burger king at 15 floors would be nice.

Myles rehab is mentioned, but nothing on restoring the street life.

And ladies and gentlemen, your fellow humans at work

In order to enhance safety and improve pedestrian circulation, Boston University
intends to widen the sidewalks along Commonwealth Avenue between the BU Bridge
and University Road. The existing sidewalk is fairly narrow in this high traffic area,
particularly behind the bus shelter. This expansion would reduce the crossing times for
the 15,000 pedestrians that traverse this area daily. Widening the sidewalk will also
increase the perceived security of those walking along it and calm automobile traffic
nearby.

The sidewalk theyre talking about is one that was narrowed during the comm ave project. Woops.

Also, looks like they plan on improving the existing stations on the green line with no consolidation.

St Paul and Pleasant MUST be merged. But no.

I read the BU IMP report and saw the traffic content that the blog talks about. It's not that we're lurking, it's just that the numbers kind of speak for itself. I don't think this is really news or a groundbreaking discovery--most of us here on archboston (aside from a couple crazies--we know who they are) understand that smart growth and mixed-use urban development generally means fewer vehicle trips, including on a college campus.

I mean beyond that, the BU document had a lot of stuff to talk about but no one really chimed in. Over 50 people clicked the link to the blog, so theyre reading this thread, but the conversation is sparse. Lurkers, sign up and talk to us!

It was a good read and reinforced facts I already knew, but it didn't provoke any discussion out of me. If you look, in most threads the view count is magnitudes higher than the post count. Not everyone has something to say every time.

President Brown to Make Milestone Law School Announcement September 13

BU President Robert A. Brown will make an important announcement about the future of Boston University’s School of Law on Thursday, September 13.

In an e-mail to the BU Law community earlier this week, he wrote, "I will be announcing a major milestone in our shared efforts to expand and modernize the Law School campus and to ensure that the School remains among the elite professional programs in the nation."

Be sure to visit www.bu.edu/law after 6 p.m. on September 13 for all of the details from the campus ceremony where President Brown will deliver his exciting news.

I wonder who the mega donor is?

Isn't David Kelley, the Emmy winning TV Producer (Ally McBeal, The Practice, Boston Legal etc.), a BU Law grad? Not saying he is the donor but I believe he is one of their more well known alumni.

^ As a BC grad and a current NEU grad student, I am curious about how this year's beanpot chants are going to come out.

(not to trivialize or make light of a serious crime, but this will be quickly infused in local rivalries.)

I remember a few years back when BC caught heat for their "trail of tears" chant during a BC-FSU football game. BC went on to lose the match.
