BU Development Thread

damn the BU library sure looks nice. Too bad it's hidden in that corner and no one really looks at the architecture.

Ironically, the elimination of the trees in this plaza for the expansion preparation has brought natural light and shadows back to the library and law tower, showcasing their brilliance once again. Of course this is temporary.

As you can see in this rendering, the plaza is eliminated entirely along with visual access to the library from most angles (Charles River view seems to remain intact):

And heres the new student center thing.

Elevator has a button that says penthouse.

Not what I expected.

Floors 3/4 and 5/6 are identical

Lovely waste of money, including these wodnerful screens telling you if the room is vacant or not.

Dining hall has a complex new system, including finger print scanning. Previously, it was just a simple swipe of a card. Obviously couldnt go in, but it looks very small if you consider they closed 3 dining halls for this.

Alley has been much improved.

Old dining halls remain the same as before.

Bonus: Never noticed how skinny this building was

Looks better from street level than I would've thought; maybe a more frontal angle is still unflattering, though?

Fare gates for food?

Dont forget to send BU their alumni checks! Always put to a good use.

Honestly, if you were walking down Bay State, you wouldnt even notice there was a new building.

Jass, the entire second floor of the building is the dining hall. Plenty of space in there.

And I agree, the alleyway treatment is top notch, especially the granite wall with bench, which seems to be getting use.

Used properly those systems save money by greater density of use, causing cost-avoidance for new construction of new facilities. Some systems are so complex they tie into Johnson Controls, lighting controls, building display systems, security systems and public address systems.

What? They couldn't spring for retina scanners? Cheap bastards.

I agree, in these pics, the front of this building looks much better than I expected. Nothing dramatic, but blends in nicely

Im not sure how much more seating area is offered on the second floor, as I believe there are also kitchens and food stations up there.

Well, you know, a clipboard could do the same job (in terms of room bookings).

If I'm a non-BU person who wants to eat here before attending an event on campus, how would I do that?

Those gates look a bit intimidating. I hope BU doesn't plan to install them at the George Sherman Union too.

Ron, its a campus dining hall so non-students are not admitted. You have to keep in mind that thousands of people pass by this location during Fenway games, so some level of security is necessary in this building.

The GSU would not restrict admission; it is open to everyone.

Thats false, the dining halls accept cash and you dont need to be a student to eat there.

Being able to quickly look up, see availabilities, and then book a meeting room online is much easier and much more convenient (especially when you're sharing online calendars with classmates).

When I was at BU, the School of Management had all their study rooms linked to the web. I'm happy to see this feature expanded into new buildings.

So, yea, I clipboard could work. So would hand writing papers, and memos, but we have computers, so why would we?

You dont need individual color monitors by every door to have an smg-style online room booking system.

Seriously, it's 2012. Integrated technology is here to stay. Get over it.

BU has the money to blow. Let 'em blow it.

I did enjoy the photo tour though. Thank you.

Farewell John Silber. I'll never forget your address to the incoming class of '98 when the Lesbian Avengers interrupted with a protest. My 2nd day of college. I am not making this up.
