That's an interesting construction method. Haven't really seen gypsum board tacked on as the walls went on, similar to traditional stick framing and ZIP/plywood. Wonder what their reasoning is..

it had been vacant for a while, but i believe bay state smelting was there before it was just a weedy/grassy lot.

Stefal -0- I agree it seems unusual
I'm guessing the motivation is that the Gypsum Board is a lot cheaper than Zip System sheathing which in turn is cheaper than Plywood
I guess it is also possible that the Fire-rating is better for a wood frame construction with Gypsum Board on the outside and inside of the studs -- although in this project the framing looks to be metal studs
