Also wondering where they'll put the hotel lobby - I would assume not on the first floor due to the tight lot and keeping the hotel and residential entrances separate?
 
This is only way they’re getting anything in there are no other options. They’ll have to take down gate and eliminate any other uses for lot . Plus part of street will be shut down for long time .

Is it easier to build a building of those dimensions or say longer but shorter Casco?

My vague recollection of the materials that were floating around a couple years ago was that there would be dedicated parking in the Fore Street garage, and a walkway or skyway connecting it to the lower floors of the hotel, but then the lobby would be on an upper floor (perhaps the top floor, can't recall) and it would be accessed by a dedicated express elevator.

Does anyone think that the tower is way too tall (283') for Portland and kind of sticks out like a sore thumb similar to the Devon Energy Center in OKC's skyline?
 
In general, I'm not a fan of the tall, skinny tower look; witness the Cracker Box in Manhattan.

At the same time, the Commerce Building didn't match anything else in the city when it was built.

I'm in a "wait and see if it actually moves forward" mode.

1. Absolutely not. The rest of the city is way too short.

2. You're really going to compare a 283' to this? Note that 283' would be 11th tallest in OKC, and Devon is taller than the Hancock. 283' just misses Boston's (including Cambridge, Somerville, Everett) Top 100.

If a tower does indeed get built here, it will be mere feet away from the back of the 3-story brick buildings that line Exchange Street. No matter how you slice it, that's gonna be kinda weird. A 300'+ tower would seem to be more appropriate for Portland Square, Top of the Old Port, or say the decrepit old Time & Temp parking garage site on Brown Street. But alas...

DZH22, my bad and I meant to insert the max allowable height of 350' into my post which is what has been discussed on here during the past week. The building as shown in the photo is 283' and already dwarfs the surrounding structures. Adding an another 70' to the top makes it even more prominent which I'm all for and would be similar on a smaller scale to OKC's Devon Tower disparity with the rest of its skyline. That's all I was trying to convey.
 
I'm curious to see what it would like if the Burj Khalifa had been built in Bayside like it was supposed to have been. Would it still be noticed as much?
