Pd -- that would be 600 FOOT TOWER!!!!

We're talking International Place, One Financial Center height building

I think this bodes well for the next office building which is proposed in the 600 ft class such as the South Station Tower or the Gateway Tower at South Bay aka mother of all stacked interchanges

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

Gateway Center is 800, not 600-class. Funny you bring that up, I was just researching it today.

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

An email I received today:

Dear Copley Neighbors,
We Neighbors have not gotten together in a long while to share notes
about the Copley Place Neiman Marcus proposed expansion project. You
may know that the BRA Board and the Boston Zoning Commission approved
the project in December, and that the BRA-appointed CAC prepared a long list of

details to be worked out with the project proponent and the BRA.
Although key approvals are in place, the project is not a Done Deal.

Copley Neighbors have not agreed to support the project. Indeed, many of us
still oppose the project for wide variety of reasons. We will get together on:

Wednesday, February 29th, at 6:30 pm,
Dow Room, Tent City
hosted by Tent City Residents’ Alliance.
Ken Kruckemeyer will moderate

A tower at Copley Place will produce unquestionable impacts. Let’s
demonstrate how we will be affected and

bring attention to our concerns.

Please bring your ideas about how to do this to the meeting and be prepared

to take on an action step to widen the circle of concern about the
project and bring the important issues to light.

Come and bring a neighbor. We are looking forward to engaging with you.

Please RSVP by Wednesday at noon. Feel free to email your comments as well.

Sincerely,
Copley Neighbors

NIMBY's will probably still be complaining when the tower is built and occupied.

Is there a chance someone on this board could pretend to be a wealthy developer who's going to revive Columbus Center? We can all pitch in some dough to pay for some web-space to show fake blueprints, etc...we can plot out a bunch of fake dump truck routes which will go through the quiet streets of the South End and say that all truck will be required to honk their horns constantly while passing in order to alert children of their presence.

I just want to do something to rile up these assholes and have them attack something new so the Copley tower can move along without any shenanigans.

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

I'm guessing they're going to have some serious issues in the lending department due to the amount of space they've essentially given up within the development to appease the affordable housing Nazis.

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

Actually, I get off at Back Bay Station every day and walk the rest of the way in for my commute. This, of course, means that I walk right past Neiman Marcus as well as Tent City (side note, Tent City guys, your name sucks. Rebrand your building ASAP, that's a free tip from your pal Student) and so one day when I had some extra free time, I decided to wander around Copley Place. So I did, I walked around for a while, I even sat right down in the middle of Copley Place where the waterfall is and re-read the Metro for a while. I never got the impression that I "wasn't welcome" there, not even any particularly strange looks (from what I could tell, anyway). Didn't go inside Neiman Marcus and actually ask about the project, but I might do that at some point in the future.

In my own opinion, I look like a college student, which I'm pretty sure makes me one of those "beautiful souls" who are supposedly not welcome. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I wonder what the Tent City people were doing that I wasn't to get a different impression than I did...?

Anyway, I hope this thing gets built. I'm looking forward to actually being around for a new skyscraper going up in the city.

Like I said in the past, we opened up a freakin American Eagle in that mall, with the largest clearance section in the City. The only people who "aren't welcomed" in Copley Place are the people who automatically assume they're not welcome. Don't judge a mall by its marble.

Tmac -- a dozen or so big burly construction workers, wearing their hardhats, standing at the back of the hall with their arms crossed would do wonders for the debate

That's true. It would be great if they could all be holding pipes, hammers and wrenches too. That would actually help greenlight most projects in the city.

Tmacc -- a little subtle muscle -- the ol the mailed fist in the velvet glove type -- very judiciously applied :=}

I remember an event back in my City of Austin Electric Utility Commission days (circa 1980) when I went to an Austin City Council hearing to represent the Utility Commission on a technical matter and I arrived early.

There was an earlier hearing about some NIMBY objection to a zoning change on a large project. The room was packed full of NIMBYs in all of the prime seats with their notebooks (paper and pencil type) all set to read their organized and coordinated polemics -- a few UT Profs who mentored them were also in evidence.

After about 1/2 hours of NIMBYs and a couple of pro-project citizens.

In strolled about a dozen members of the building trades -- looked almost as if they just came down off of a project -- hats-- T shirts-- lots of muscles

They just filed in an leaned against the back wall of the hall wih their arms folded and waited patiently for the NIMBY hour to finish -- then one walked to the microphone and said in a soft but deep baritone

"Beggin y'alls pardon -- but this here project means JOBS" -- it passed without a dissenting vote if I recall

Does wonders!

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

"Who's not welcome?" Many who have complained from Tent City were in wheelchairs or otherwise handicapped. Many, people of color.

Quick question: How does a person in a wheelchair get into Copley Place?

There you go.

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

I'm pretty sure there is elevator access from the street to all levels of Copley Place.

Yep, there are pieces of Westinghouse hydraulic junk on the Marriott side (in front of Champions) and Westin side (near ABP).

I'm hoping with the renovations, they will install newer, nicer ones.

There's a 'creepy-extra terrestrial-in human form disguise' vibe to that.

"We are looking forward to engaging with you"????????

"......be prepared to take on an action step to widen the circle of concern about the project"????????

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

"We are urban de-activists. You will be assimilated."

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

"... will produce unquestionable impacts"

Just to be clear, we're talking about the construction of a tall building in a neighborhood of tall buildings, right? There isn't some genocide or planned apocalypse that I might be missing?

It's as if the person who wrote that thinks that s/he is more educated and has some deep inside 'neighborhood' knowledge that the BRA and city don't have. And if this person is so worthy, why couldn't s/he sign his/her own name? NeimanMarcusWatch, we're looking in your corner buddy.

Pathetic.
