Dorchester Infill and Small Developments

A couple important things have been in the news. The "Greenway Connector" route has been chosen and though I am disappointed it doesn't include a boardwalk but it is actually a good thing.

In other news Gov. Baker has put his support behind an important effort to get the Lower Neponset River listed as a superfund site by the EPA. The river and its banks between Mattapan and the ocean is heavily contaminated with PCBs. Large quantities of these pollutants have built up behind the two dams on this stretch making their removal impossible. They can't just be torn down or they would contaminate the marshes at the mouth of the estuary. Beyond the need to physically protect the public from pollution this is also about the overall health of the harbor as an ecosystem and in the big picture climate resiliency.

Also, has anyone heard anything about the walking trail behind the houses over the subway from Shawmut toward Fields Corner? I haven't seen anything since covid.

“The Jan Karski Way Extension Project will bring 403 residential units to Dorchester. Sixty units will be designated affordable, and the developer has agreed to increase affordable housing contributions in the future. A transit-oriented development, Jan Karski Way is a 10-minute walk to Andrew Station and a nine-minute walk to the commuter rail at Newmarket Stations. The project will also include enhanced streetscapes, the construction of new streets and sidewalks, as well as 14,665 square feet of retail space, storage for 488 bicycles and 47,786 square feet of new publicly accessible open space.”

Seems large enough for its own thread! Looks cool.

Approved in January, plans call for a 6-story, 206-unit residential building. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester and the Martin Richard Foundation on Wednesday filed detailed plans with the city for a $50 million fieldhouse on Mount Vernon Street, in the Columbia Point section of Dorchester.

The 75,000-square-foot facility would include indoor playing fields and courts, fitness rooms, and a theater, as well as a cafe with outdoor seating and “the only ‘front yard’ along Mount Vernon Street,” part of an effort to turn this stretch of roadway into what the Boys & Girls Clubs described as a “destination location.”

The second is on Dot Ave across from Banh mi Ba Le. Not sure about the third.
