Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Anytime, Suff. It had been awhile since I was at the site. It has really moved along since then. Some of the dormitory girders are bigger than the ones at Two Financial Center. Either they are planning for alot of water beds, or some real obese scholars.

Is there another tower going up over the Paramont or is just the Modern Theater getting a tower, and this crane is just another crane helping build the one under construction, which I believe the Herald had a picture of the topping off in last week's paper.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

The Paramount is currently getting an addition that is taller than the theatre, but I would not call it a tower. No construction has yet started on the Modern.

artwork recreation for theater

Preservation, landmarks expert reviews Paramount Theatre art replicas

by David Rosen
Members of the Boston Landmarks Commission, the Boston Preservation Alliance and the Emerson College community recently reviewed replicas of historic artwork that will be used to adorn the Paramount Theatre, which is undergoing extensive renovation as part of the College's Paramount Center project on Washington Street.

The replicas were presented by Jeff Greene, president of EverGreene Painting Studios in New York City and an authority on preservation and restoration of landmark theaters, including Emerson's own Cutler Majestic.

Built in 1932 as a picture palace, the landmark Paramount Theatre closed its doors in 1976 and has fallen into disrepair. Emerson is renovating it for adaptive reuse as a live performance venue with 565 seats. Evergreene is creating replicas of the original Art Deco ornaments and paintings based on photos and remnants that have survived. The theater will host performances by local and national arts groups and will also be used by Emerson students.

In addition to the Paramount Theatre, the new Center will also include a Performance Development Center (PDC) and a residence hall for some 260 students. The PDC will house multiple rehearsal and practice rooms, a black box theater, a film screening room, a scene shop, classrooms and offices.

Construction began in 2007 and is expected to be completed in 2009.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

The Paramount actually has a twin in Aurora, Illinois.....Same decor, slightly different configuration. Check out America's Stunning Theatres.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

That's actually incorrect, the Paramount Boston's sister theater is in Denver. The Aurora, Illinois Paramount is fairly different.

Compare those photos to this shot of the Boston Paramount when it opened, and the older pre-demo pictures earlier in the thread.

They interior layout was almost exactly the same and there were only slight difference in the decoration as far as paint colors.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

That's actually not incorrect. While all three theatres bear a great deal of similarity, the Paramount in Aurora is, in fact, closer to the design of the Paramount in Boston. A brochure that came out in the early eighties hailed Boston's Paramount as its "twin".

RE: all the above

Nobody likes a know-it-all.

Especially if they get the "facts" wrong!

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Then give us the "facts". I'd much rather be corrected than to distort the truth.

Did Henrik Ibsen or August Strindberg write Legally Blond?

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

You can get a better feel for this building if you hang a right at the next street and look to the right, or around the back in the alley
