Encore Boston Harbor Casino | 1 Broadway | Everett

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Yep. It's ugly but I'm fine with it. Imagine if this had landed somewhere on the actual waterfront, or in the seaport? We'd all be much more vocal about it and just as powerless to stop it from happening there. Casinos are malls on steroids--those big blank walls are fine facing the power plant and Gateway center. Leave the hotel guests their beautiful views of Honda of Boston.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Its wayyyy better than the 1960s style casino first proposed.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

From further out it's becoming more obvious just how much bigger this is than the Assembly buildings.

Looks like that was taken from Waltham. You must have a good camera.

Yes and kind of. It's from Little Prospect, the lower (better) view from Prospect Hill. My camera wasn't terribly expensive but has a 30x optical zoom so I can zoom in from far away without it pixelating. On the other hand I have to wait a solid 10 seconds between shots so it's a lot better as a landscape camera than, say, getting pics of my kids!

Great vantage point to use that camera. Google maps says its 9.2 miles on a line from there to the casino site, almost exactly due east (maybe 87 or 88 degrees on the compass instead of 90).

I can't help but brood upon how in the very long run, when we're all dead--and assuming humankind has continued on its "business as usual" trajectory of CO2 emissions--the projected 70 meter rise in sea levels cited by most authorities means the Atlantic will have inundated nearly ever single piece of land in sight in that perspective, and will be lapping halfway up Prospect Hill.

The sources I'm seeing say the casino tower will be 370 feet high, so, including its base elevation above sea level (10 feet or so?) we can assume the Atlantic will rise to drown slightly more than half of it...

You know, DBM, I was actually having a decent morning until I read this. :)

If you haven't already, consider reading 'The World Without Us', which also explores how long it will take for non-inundated skyscrapers and similar structures to dissipate into nothing.

And in all sincerity - thanks for the thoughtful, albeit morose, post!

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

The things that are gonna last from mankind are basically the suez canal (needs constant dredging so not forever) panama canal, pyramids for a while, huge mining holes, nuclear waste, cape cod canal, things like that. Not plastic, steel buildings, glass...etc. Huge earth moving projects and nuclear radiation in the ground layers probably will be it, plus high co2 levels in antarctica.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

70 meters? Thats total deglaciation, which very few models predict at any point in the remotely near future. To put things in perspective: The amount of time it would take for us to melt the ice caps would be ~5000 years. The pyramids are closer to us than that. Lets keep things a bit more grounded.

We are more than on pace for the worst case scenarios of global warming and sea level rise. Multiple positive feedback loops have emerged that will make slowing either incredibly difficult. Both warming and ice melt are accelerating faster than many thought they would. 70 meters is not likely in our lifetime by any means but the conservative estimates for sea level rise ignore such loops. The last time we had this much CO2 in the atmosphere the seas were dozens of meters higher than they are today. 6-10 feet is pretty certain over the next century now (and these predictions have had to be increased every few years) that alone would be disastrous in Boston.

Respectfully disagreed, but this is not the thread to debate this topic in detail.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

And I was just making the point that its interesting to ponder what will be left behind if we were to leave. With society becoming more and more technological, basically from the 2000's on will all be gone its all 1's and 0's, paper from the past can last a while but not forever either. The Empire State building wont last 200 years once the windows break, basically its the pyramids that are carved out of solid stone, a few other monuments that are rock, large earth moving projects like the panama canal, cape cod canal, the suez will fill with sand without dredging but the others don't have this problem that Im aware of. Besides that its major holes in the earth for mining, nuclear explosions, carved out sides of mountains like I witnessed in Spain, things of that nature, and then whats left deposited in the soil/ice like radiation/co2 and other things. I think though things like the cape cod canal, panama, and gigantic mining holes in the earth will be obvious that someone was here once all steel, glass, paper, plastic, wood, has eroded away.

Anyways yes off topic, but interesting to ponder.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Hilarious how we have gone from Cheesecake Factory exteriors to overall exterior still better than the original design to photography to planet Earth after people are gone.

Hence, my wording, "in the very long run"...

The problem with that statement is that its a nonstarter. It requires a long term technological stagnation, while also maintaining current capabilities.
