Encore Boston Harbor Casino | 1 Broadway | Everett

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

I'm wondering if they only count "Boston Proper" and not greater Boston? It seems like this Wynn Casino project alone should up our "crane count" significantly! If you see the infographics contained within the article, it lists Boston as 11 cranes.

Yes, just cities, not metro areas. Toward the end of that article it mentions that there are more cranes in suburban Seattle that are not counted in their total - same would presumably apply to Boston and the other cities mentioned.

Boston is pretty unique for a major metropolitan city in that it failed to incorporate the surrounding areas under one municipal government. The land area of Boston is about 42% less than Seattle as a result (Seattle itself is relatively smaller by land area than over a hundred other US cities) . "Boston" for comparison with other cities should never be considered just Boston otherwise it is comparing apples and oranges.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Well, depends if you're comparing one municipal apple to another municipal apple, or if you're really trying to compare one dense/urban orange to another dense/urban orange, so to speak. Looks like this article just compared cranes in particular municipalities - I'd agree a more complete picture would be cranes in urban areas or metro areas.

A new traffic light was added for Horizon Way/Chemical Ln. Is this temporary, for construction? I hope this isn't the permanent driveway for the casino. There's already a potential access point at Dexter St! Last thing that was needed was another traffic light. Meanwhile, no bus improvements, so that is still a shitty alternative.

I believe that placement is to avoid the whole "host community" thing by keeping the entrance way out of Boston city limits. Hopefully they will eliminate the Dexter St light.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

I hope they don't eliminate the Dexter St light, either. Sometimes I am approaching from the Chelsea side, and shoot down Robin St to Dexter St. I'd probably never make a left onto Broadway without the light. What a totally bogus idea that this removes any host obligation. It makes things worse.

Actually doesn't sound like they would consider eliminating the Dexter St light since they are going to be diverting trucks onto Dexter St/Robin St truck route... so yes, this is just adding another light... which sucks a bit.

Boston could step in and eliminate the need for left hand turns into the Horizon Way entrance if they made that entrance across from Dexter St a public street all the way to the border with Everett. Therefore avoiding the host community issue because it is a street not a driveway. But I think Wynn is going to want their entrance to extend all the way to the street for aesthetic reasons.

Still I think they could or could have gotten creative with signage and landscaping to make it look like Wynn's property using the existing intersection at Dexter.

Maybe it isn't a big deal either way if they can synchronize the lights well enough, but still seems like a issue created by stupid inter-community politics, non-cooperation early in the process and lack of coordination rather than doing what was best for traffic flow.

Great pic that I found on reddit.

That is a great pic. I thought it interesting that they were using rail to haul away excavated soil. Makes sense. But also that it is an active commuter rail line would seem to make it more complicated schedule wise.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

How were they not expecting this?! Were they really expecting retailers to go from a very posh strip of road to an area with no real signs of life except for traffic and smoke stacks. I mean I get the proximity to downtown, as well as Assembly, but I do not get the deal.

Carl Stevens (WBZ 1030 Radio) Twitter:

"Wynn Boston Harbor says they'll have fewer stores than anticipated. Luxury retailers balk at making jump from Newbury Street."

Hopefully they replace these storefronts with more restaurant space and/or more non-casino entertainment. Wynn is smart enough to know that he needs some non-gambling draws to get the casual gambler (or perhaps the regular gambler with non-gambling spouse/friends) to make return visits after coming once to check it out.

Put some amusement rides there and boom. Now kids have a reason to go to this place of debauchery.
