Interesting, so we are basically seeing the same pattern as last Fall, just with a bigger number due to Encore.

It looks like Encore is taking only a small amount/if any of the other MA casinos business. Aside from the CT casinos which have stated they have been impacted by MGM and Plainridge in MA, where is this business coming from - people that would otherwise be going to Atlantic City or Vegas? Or are these de novo customers that are new to gambling?

Because the House Speaker represents Revere and Winthrop, the location of Suffolk Downs.
Navigator -- No -- the Horse Racing development fund is allocated for breeding and housing horses and paying purses -- and the intent if for the future development of a Horse Racing Track -- somewhere in Eastern / Central MA

Suffolk is done with live racing -- although apparently there might still be a NY-style Simulcasting facility open at least during the next decade as the Old Suffolk property is slowly redeveloped

and then there is this relatively recently a story about a proposed track in Rowley
So many people mobbed a meeting on a proposed $60 million Rowley horse racing track, they had to cancel it
The proposed project is among several looking to bring thoroughbred horse racing back to Massachusetts.

Horse racing ended at Suffolk Downs in June, but a new proposal could see a $60 million race track in Rowley.

A $60 million proposal to build a thoroughbred horse racing track in Rowley has already kicked up commotion and sparked a race: A race to get inside Town Hall.
So many people showed up at a Board of Selectmen’s meeting to hear about the project from developers Monday night that officials had no choice but to table the talk and postpone.
The crowd, estimated to be over 200 people, far exceeded the 174-person maximum capacity for a town auditorium, triggering fire code safety concerns, Town Administrator Deborah Eagan told Boston.com this week.
“We never have people like that show up, even at Town Meeting,” said Eagan, who’s worked in Rowley for over 20 years.

It'd be interesting to see if BOS-LAS air traffic has fallen YOY for the Sep-Oct-Nov-Dec period.

I wonder if traditional Mass State Lottery sales (e.g., Keno and scratch tickets) have seen a casino impact.

Other than that, I'd think driving distance casinos (e.g., CT, RI, NY) would be the biggest substitutes, as well as new gambling. I doubt many MA gamblers are cancelling Vegas plans for Everett. For out-of-towners who are now gambling in MA, I bet it's a mix of new gambling, driving distance casinos, and some flying-distance casinos.

"The desert isn’t exactly prime territory for pine trees, snowy winters and mistletoe, but the Encore Boston Harbor team and Wynn Resorts folks in Las Vegas have teamed up to learn a new palate of plantings in time for their first holiday season in Everett.... Chadwick said they have 26 holiday trees, 16 wreaths, 500 feet of garland and 5,000 six-inch poinsettias providing the backdrop for the colossal [entrance] display. ... Meanwhile, outside in the cold weather was a totally new experiment. Coming from Montana originally, Chadwick thought back to the winters there and some of the plants that work in a cold environment. This year, along with lighting up 67 trees outside the resort, they did full plantings all over the outside areas... He said they used 15 florists and 15 gardeners on staff."

Encore Boston not hitting lofty projections, blames soft revenue from slot machines

Last Friday, a source told Boston 25 News that 70 bartenders, apprentices and casino workers were told during mandatory meetings that their jobs were being cut.

Not only that, but the displaced bartenders who work so-called ‘Back of the House’ service bars, located out of sight of customers, are being replaced by dispensary machines that cocktail servers would have to operate themselves.

In a statement to Boston 25 News, Encore Boston said "The addition of the drink dispensers allows us the opportunity to significantly improve both the speed of service and provide a better guest experience. These dispensers are not unique to Encore."

That's because the slot machines don't pay out. I've played them twice and it was a total waste of time.

December 2019 Revenue is out. Encore had its best month yet.

MGM & Plainridge had their lowest months since opening.

I was thinking about how strongly the theming at Encore deliberately evokes Chinese aesthetics. How much do we think that is trying to appeal to the local Asian American population and how much is trying to appeal to Chinese nationals?

Its not exactly convenient for people living in China, even compared to other casinos in America, but it does have something Vegas doesn’t have: proximity to an ungodly number of Universities. If you have money you want to get out of China, then tossing a fair chunk of change through a casino while visiting your kid in college, and leaving whatever winnings you have left in the US sounds pretty appealing.

Sounds like you have never met a serious gambler. LOL.

I’m not saying the people in this scenario are serious gamblers. I‘m just saying that many would love to tell party bosses back home that they lost their money at the tables, rather than admit they parked it in real estate in Boston.
