Fan Pier Developments | Seaport

Right developer wrong location. I do not support this location at all.

Will post why when I get to a computer.

Please make sure to explain what you know that Steve Wynn doesn't. I've got to believe he's considered many other options including Sufolk Downs.

Odds are that the casino will go in at Suffolk, I think those people are far better connected to Menino. And I don't think they will allow two in Boston.

The problem with Suffolk is infrastructure for Traffic. We do have a good location for the T. It will be a mad house cutting through Revere. But I would rather see a casino in this location rather than Fan Pier and Seaport district.

Menino does not care about the long-term value of Boston. Whoever greases his pockets with a better deal will get his support for the project. I'm betting Massachusetts will have casino's in the near-term future.

The pressure right now is Jobs and our politicans will hoodwink everybody into thinking Casino's are the answer. What a shame.

Seaside casinos don't seem to do much harm to Monaco. And Macau has practically replicated Vegas next to its Portuguese colonial historic district, without many negative effects. There's a casino on the architecturally flashy waterfront exhibition grounds in Lisbon that bothers nobody.

Casinos are sad places in general, and they're not the right answer for the economy. If we're going to get an Atlantic City-style casino, I'd rather see it at Suffolk where the gambling bums already congregate. But something with style and elan, a casino worthy of a high stakes James Bond kind of game, could be a worthy addition to the waterfront.

Let's just not make it "casino row". The key is to only have one of these.

I am sure he has absolutely considered every available location in the metro, he is a smart businessman. My comment was referring to my own opinion. If any developer is going to be building a casino in MA, my preference would be towards him 100% over anyone else. I recently stayed at Encore LV and every fit and finish was just beautiful.

I think i was a little knee-jerk myself in judging this location. I will wait for a proposal before committing to an opinion.

Wynn pulled this same stunt in Philadelphia about 3 months ago, only to drop it like a hot coal.

How about creating contemporary North Ends, Beacon Hills or Back Bays? Or are you content with the city resting on its past laurels forever?

Why does it have to be a question between Waltham-by-the-Sea and a tacky amusement park (which would likely still look like Waltham-by-the-Sea)? Why aren't we creating a great place to live, work and do business?

Furthermore, I dont think a casino would be the great resident and business magnet people hope. How many people or companies do hear clamoring to relocate to Atlantic City?

It's not that WE are content. It's the politicians such as the mayor that are. Unless we can change that, we can only hope for best.

Isn't that kind of what's there already. I can't think of a single football stadium in America that is walking distance from a CBD. Just not a good use of land in the heart of a city.

If parking was just as terrible as Fenway's is, then it would promote more public transit use to get there. I think it would work nicely if they don't have parking for the public.

EDIT: That would kill off tailgating for the Pats, though. Oh well.

Although a Pats game along the water would be awsome. It woud be a barren waste land 340 days a year and that assumes you have playoff games and over 15 larger concerts. Baseball parks work well in urban settings b/c those dudes play 82 (?) home games a year.

* And on a side note baseball players don't get enough credit for the 164 (?) games they play in 7 months, that is absolutely grueling, especailly catchers.

The NFL stadiums of Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh are all a short walk from the city centers. The Chicago stadium is a little beyond walking distance from the Loop (about 2 miles), but still pretty nearby.

(Baseball teams play 162 regular-season games in 6 months, 81 of them at home.)

We've had this debate here before. At least it doesn't come up as often as "give the Greenway time for the trees to grow in!"

The NFL stadiums of Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh are all a short walk from the city centers.

These cities have barren wasteland downtowns compared to Boston. The best of the lot, Pittsburgh, is actually across the river from the stadium. The analogy might work if we didn't care about the Seaport, but we're trying to turn it into a vibrant urban neighborhood, too.

The Chicago stadium is a little beyond walking distance from the Loop (about 2 miles), but still pretty nearby.

It's in a park though and not inserted into a potential neighborhood.

(Also, for comparison's sake, Kenmore Square is about two miles from downtown Boston. You'd have to get beyond the Black Falcon terminal, maybe even to City Point, to be two miles away within the Seaport)

WOW I was wrong

E-mail Print (6) Comments Text size Share Buzz up!The day after the prospect of a South Boston waterfront casino financed by Las Vegas mogul Stephen Wynn was reported, and without seeing any specific proposal, Hub Mayor Thomas M. Menino said he would not support it.

The mayor insisted that Suffolk Downs, which has proposed a $600 million betting complex, is the right place for the city?s first resort-style casino, saying it has been a gambling establishment for 75 years.

But there?s a rub. The mayor?s arch-nemesis Vornado Realty Trust, which he blames for the stalled development of the Filene?s block in Downtown Crossing, owns 20 percent of Suffolk Downs, as the Herald reported July 7.

Back then, the mayor was unconcerned that the New York firm would profit from a Hub casino while leaving Downtown Crossing with a big hole in the ground. He said the two projects were unrelated.

This week, the mayor reportedly called for Vornado to get out of Suffolk Downs, especially if the firm is planning to exit the failed Downtown Crossing deal as has been reported.

Dot Joyce, the mayor?s spokeswoman, told the Herald yesterday, ?I guess he changed his mind.?

Meanwhile, a bill to allow resort casinos is stuck on Beacon Hill in conference committee. The House approved two casinos and up to 750 slot machines at each of the state?s four racetracks. The Senate passed a measure permitting three casinos, but no ?racinos.? Yesterday, state Inspector General Gregory Sullivan joined Gov. Deval Patrick in criticizing the House racino proposal for giving racetracks ?no-bid? contracts.

An attorney for Suffolk Downs declined to comment on the prospect of a Wynn casino yesterday.

But another possible rival for an Eastern Massachusetts casino license - David Nunes, who has proposed building a resort casino in Milford - welcomed competition from Wynn.

City Councilor Steve Murphy, a candidate for state treasurer, said it could be difficult for anyone to compete with Suffolk Downs, given that the racetrack owners have been working on a casino plan for several years. ?But I wouldn?t count Steve Wynn out,? he said. ?He has a track record of building resort casinos

Fan Pier is 1/3 mile from the financial district.
I tried to make the walk from Soldiers Field Stadium to downtown Chicago after a game one Sunday when I lived there. It was November and the wind was whipping off Lake Michigan. I lasted about 1/4 mile before I hailed a cab.

Fair enough. I was thinking "close into the city center" as opposed to "way far away like Foxboro or Giants Stadium"

Fucking casinos, they sound so good and so wonderful. I can never decide if they are. I want something like Monaco, like what czsz mentioned, but I can't shake the feeling that we'll end up with some half-assed Lumiere Place.

They had a casino episode as well.... where the waitresses were true Brits, straight from the streets of Sussex they are.

About the casino's in Mass. It seems everybody in every Town wants a casino.

New Bedford, Fall River, Holyoke, Milford, Boston, Revere.
This is the future of Mass. Great Innovation

Are there any figures on how much money from Massachusetts is raked in by Connecticut casinos? And how much that state pulls in from tourists? Any figures at all?
