Fan Pier Developments | Seaport

Fine, instead let's build a casino and condone such activities like gambling. Still I don't see what's so bad about having something similar to navy pier in Boston. And no I don't need extra classes. I can barely get by with all the cost of attending school and I wouldn't be able to work. Also, no to binge drinking. I don't feel like murdering my kidneys and puking during work. Occasionally, yeah it's a good way to get together and meeting people.

I lived in Chicago 2005-2007. I went to Navy Pier twice. First when I had friends in town who wanted to see the famous Navy Pier. It sucked. We last 30 minutes. The second time I went for a business event that was an indoor presentation like anything you would see at the WTC or BCEC.

Try binge drinking. It's not that bad.

It's about time you got yourself a woman.

What cities have lots of obvious "stuff" to do?

A few have built-in "stuff". In NYC, you can walk around and gawk at the skyscrapers and swarming humanity, which is fun in and of itself. In warm weather cities like Miami and San Diego, you can hit the beach. I'm a beach bum so that never gets old. Winter blows. But I digress....

One of my favorite pastimes is to go into town and walk around aimlessly, and discover food joints that I never knew existed. If you wanna amuse yourself, you gotta get creative...

I have one, do you?

I do, but it's hard when you're a cash strapped college student with no car. Been flying kites, building sand castles, etc. You also have to make sure the activity is fun for the group.

All aside, my point is, I don't understand what is wrong about adding another attraction to the city.

I think we need to capitalize on Pleasure Bay. It's underrated and isn't used to it's full potential. It would be awesome to have a couple spots like that. Good for windsurfing, wading, kite flying, lying out, and walking.

I feel like an amusement park in the Seaport will end up run down and grimy...

There should be plenty to work with around here.

What would you do to Pleasure Bay to make it more useful? Seems like you can already do all of the activities you mentioned there.

I know, I wasn't saying you can't, I know you indeed can. I'm not sure what else I would add, though. Maybe some food places around the roadside that hugs it (I don't know if there are any) even if seasonal.

Clean up the area around it, add housing, some food, and get rid of the shipping yard would make the biggest difference.

Perhaps cleaning up the water (dredge the bay, cover the bottom with gravel and then gradually finer-grained sand).

get rid of the shipping yard

No thanks, I'd prefer to keep what remains of Boston's working container port.

Adding more concessions would be fine. I don't know where you'd put more housing without encroaching on the existing parkland.

Don't agree with removing the port at all, I think it's fine as is. Unless there's some better place to put it (which there basically isn't right now).

They could have another Pleasure Bayesque place down near UMass Boston area maybe.

The trouble with Pleasure Bay is [lack of parking] + [no subway stations nearby] = [local attraction rather than citywide amenity].

Pleasure Bay is a stagnant mess with filthy "beaches". Carson Beach is leagues above it -and that is T accessible as well. Still the problem of amenities though. I agree the city should do more to enliven and promote these close-in beaches. For example, the Bayside Expo site can be redeveloped as a cafe/entertainment/boardwalk zone - A perfect location between the T and the beach itself.

Pleasure Bay and Castle Island have plenty of parking. What's lacking is public transit -- it's a long walk from the bus stops on Farragut Road, even though they are served by four different (and pretty frequent) bus lines.

Ron, head down there on a warm Saturday or Sunday and see how many open spots you find.

I've been there on weekends, and it's annoying to have to walk past over a half mile of parking to get from the Farragut Road bus stop to Sullivan's. Especially when it's 90+ degrees outside. Motorists have much better access to Castle Island than public transit users.

Agreed on that point. Though I still say parking isn't as good as "destination" urban beaches (e.g., Jones Beach).

Pleasure bay isn't under underutilized. The whole area from Castle Island to Carson Beach is well utilized.

I would add a concession stand where the ice rink is since Sullivan's has lines out the door. Although, I remember reading a while ago about someone trying to open a restaurant along the waterfront near there and the NIMBY's crushed it. Maybe you could get away with a concession stand open Friday through Sunday during the summer.
