Why the hell are they animated like that. It's like I'm experiencing an earthquake.

They are stereographs and when you switch back and forth real fast they look like they are 3D. These aren't going fast enough to really work.

I think the 3D effect's pretty cool - if you go to the photostream you can see how the original photo compares with the animated stereograph.

Man if only they kept SS the way it was with the old building extending down the street.

The photo looks south on Washington Street from the corner of Avery Street.

More info on the State Theatre here. It, along with the Hotel Avery, was demolished in the late 1980s or early 90s to clear land for the never-built "Commonwealth Center" project. Eventually, the Millennium Place (now Ritz-Carlton) towers were built here instead.

At first glance the cobblestones in the foreground looked randomly placed.

Has there ever been an attempt to place cobblestones or bricks randomly within a street? Seems like it could be interesting, a kind of street jewelry. Would this have a desired traffic slowing effect or would it just be dangerous?

Ive seen cities use cobblestone as speed humps, without the hump. The 3-5 feet of uneven rumbling slows people down.

You sort of get the effect in the new kenmore square intersections, but not as much because the bricks they used are flat and even. People definitely go slower due to the noise and vibrations.

Cobblestones have been used in Lowell on major downtown roads for some time. At first they merely slowed traffic, but now, after many winters of frost heaving, the cobbled areas are pot-holed road hazards that destroy your car's suspension. They bring traffic to a near halt, wreck the car, and create traffic jams. Please, no cobblestones! I would prefer the rumble strips used on highways to slow traffic.

'Downtown' Nantucket streets are made of cobblestones. They are impossible to bicycle on unless you want to break a few bones.

Even the pedestrian zone cobblestones in Faneuil Hall Marketplace were removed for flatter, "cobblestone-esque" pavers because of the alleged wear and tear (and difficulty for heal-wearers) of walking on the pavement.

Not Flickr, but anyways...

These B&M Burgundy colors are much better than MBTA Purple/Pink...
