Four Seasons Tower @ CSC | 1 Dalton Street | Back Bay

They look a tad lonely I would have to say ... and I am not even a "built it higher" guy.

A gazillion redundant skyline shots but virtually none of what matters - street level.

The street level was doomed from the start. The Christian Science Center banned alcohol from being served on the ground floor, plus the hotel and condo lobbies take up a good portion of the ground space on a small parcel.

(frankly, this explanation is getting redundant.)

I don't think kmp was referring specifically to 1 Dalton; rather, was taking the opportunity to again poke at the height fanatics on this site, who have a particular myopia when it comes to what gets included in the vertical dimension of their photos...

That said, all of this is nonetheless redundant

More or less. I guess it’s a commentary on how people interact with the city. For suburbanites and height fetishists(typically one in the same) this is all that matters but for people who actually interact with and live or frequently visit what’s happening over their head is largely irrelevant as long as it doesn’t suck.

In other words, more of a focus on urbanism and less on petty wankery would be amazing.

In other words, your bitching is much more valuable to this site than my (and others) pictures.... In your own mind.

Newsflash: You add NOTHING to ArchBoston. Literally, absolutely NOTHING. Go crawl back under your rock and we'll see you again this time next month for another wave of useless complaining.

Why is everyone so 0 -100 here? Just chill. Everyone is ok ... we all have axes and we all grind them.

Lets do this.

- KMP is right. That picture does nothing to support his/her issue of promoting street level activity. (Although it is a picture of a skyline of a city that continues to have a vibrant street level dispite many challenges)

- DHZ ... that is a cool pic. Thanks for taking it (you should probably just take it for granted that you post in an anonymous public place and people will say stuff. Oh well)

Now don't we all feel better?

kmp is an ass. dzh's contributions to this site are a big part of what makes it worth visiting.

if you don't like/aren't interested in certain threads or certain photos -- ignore them. pretty simple. there's no justification for telling others that they need to fall in line with your preferences.

I find it symptomatic of America’s incessant polarization of everything.

Did it ever cross some of your minds that some of us - probably the majority, actually - thoroughly enjoy both tall, artistic skyscrapers AND energetic, well-programmed street activation? I know, I know, hard to wrap one’s head around.

Let’s all be a little more like BeeLine and just chill.

i posted one of the more, rare poignant discussions about street level that took place in recent memory (for the approval meeting for Dock Square). BPDA Executive Board vs BPDA were engaged in a battle to the death.....

The idea we're height anything is absurd. Boston is squat, and aB is Mid-rise level. Mike Monahan: "Dock Square should be 30 stories." Tosh: Garden Garage should should be 60 stories (which launches me to my next topic "65 at 65". Oh, shytte not today!

We're mostly all everything around here (aB): least that's the impression i get. Some areas where there's room for improvement are covered in the colorful discussion for whether or not to approve the Dock Square project between Mr. Greeley, Ms. Shurtleff, Mr. Landsmark & Mr. Monahan. For the so called lost souls on aB that need saving, it's right here. 2:04:00

^Yes, x1000

Forest and the trees.

As for the redundant polarized arguments from both sides: they are exhausting.

It's August and there is still plywood covering windows and part of a workers exterior elevator attached to the building. Building opened 4 months ago, no? I expect some work to continue for months after opening but this much? Seems like they rushed the opening.

Its not noticeable to anyone inside, they just dont occupy those few rooms. Its not a big deal and the sooner the tower opens the sooner theyre recouping on their investment. Its only noticeable when you look up at the building.

I think theyre waiting for the exterior elevator to come down fully before they button it all up. The above pics show theres only a few floors left until its gone completely so should be down in a couple days. Then theyll be able to knock em all out at once and it shouldnt take more than a couple days.

Wow, unnecessarily harsh.

By the way, I like all of the pictures people post, whether or not they cater to my own specific interests. Keep them coming, but let's try to be civil when it comes to criticism.

sure, civility is -- as a general rule -- the way to go, but DZH (one of the most prolific posters of photos on aB) was reacting to someone who called out his considerable and time-consuming work as "irrelevant" and "petty wankery."

if i added as much to the overall aB image gallery as DZH and someone demeaned my efforts similarly, i'd be pissed, as well.

you wouldn't?

Yeah!! The skyline is irrelevant to anyone who lives within the city, were too sophisticated for that shit. All those people who spend millions for those views from the upper floors of tall buildings, are only paying more for the high floors so they can scope out more vegan juice bars from a tactically elevated position...

If you like whats going on above ground level then Im sorry to inform you... but youre a suburbanite. Us city folk are too busy looking left and right for flying derailed red line cars than to look up at that crap. Its nothing personal, its life n death.

I love this new thing where people have to proclaim just how much of a height fetishist, they are not!! ... while they scroll through a skyscraper forum day after day, night after night, looking at all the buildi..cough (street level). Yea, just here for the retail...

DZ thanks for the pics tho really. F all that other crap, just do what u do.

I appreciate those of you who came to my defense. I enjoy posting pictures but it can be time-consuming. Taking the pictures is the easy (and most enjoyable) part, but then I have to sort through them, and sometimes there are hundreds. If I don't get them posted within about a week they're outdated, and my penchant for taking tons of pictures keeps me busy. My first cuts go to 2 folders, generic "Construction" and "More" for the other ones that stood out. Then I need to sort the construction into appropriate subfolders (sometimes harder said than done when multiple projects are in a given photo). After that I might realize that, hey, I have like 30 pictures of the same building and it's WAY too many! So then I have to compare them all against each other and chop, and chop, and chop them down to a reasonable amount. At the end I make a 2 part edit to "Color" and "Clarity", sometimes with straightening thrown in. Typically I can find a good combo to apply to all the pics in a given set, but it's different for every set of pictures I take. (I like ~70 color, 50 clarity) Finally, I upload everything, find the threads, and post them all one at a time. It does take a while....

So anyway, most of the time they (appear to be) ignored, but I recognize that there are plenty of lurkers who appreciate the pictures (yes their sporadic recognition does make a difference). I also know that they are the best possible way I can personally contribute to this site since my profession is unrelated. I don't often have the right timing to get daylight pictures within the city itself, which is another reason I'm typically at my lookout points instead. (also why I bought a camera with a strong optical zoom!)

The fact that most of my pictures are not commented on is absolutely fine. However, is it really too much to ask that somebody doesn't openly criticize my efforts? I even get the redundancy, but would counter that somewhat redundant pictures make it easier to track the progress as a comparison tool. But going out of your way to be nasty, and take shots, is 100% troll behavior. While TRM was an absolute broken record in a few areas, I don't remember that user openly belittling the work that other users put into this site. To those of you who do, you are the worst type of trolls here and if I go at you with an "uncalled for" fury, just know that (A) you deserve nothing less, and (B) I'm definitely not the only one who believes that either. I actually care about this site, and I contribute the best that I can to it. Can you say the same?

With that out of the way, here are a couple of redundant pictures from 7/28. Click in to view larger.
